Hi,

My DIY dobsonian has a metal tube that needs some sort of protection on the ends, some sort of plastic strip I'm thinking, that slips/wraps over the edge?
The sketch gives an idea of what I'm looking for.

I've used gaffer tape up until now but it doesn't look too flash. :D
I really would like to get something a bit better.

Searching on the net I can see car door protector strip, but it's a bit 'chunky' and I don't know how it would go around a curve?

I calculate that I need maybe 2.25 meters in length to do both ends, maybe about 20mm deep. To fit over metal that is 1mm thick.

Does anyone have a source for such a thing? Or maybe you have a better idea altogether?

Thanks

Chris

Hi Chris, I had to find this stuff for work some time back.
We changed our design and didn't end up purchasing any, but I do remember finding a few sources. I can't remember them off the top of my head, but I will see if I can retrace my steps and will get back to you.

Hi Chris - Clark Rubber might have something. I was in a similar situation with finishing off a dew shield for a 100mm refractor. I initially thought of using some rubber edging to glue on but ended up buying the car edging strip. There are various sizes so it can come in fairly small profiles. It readily bends (around 120mm diameter for my scope) and there is no need of glue. It's also been very robust. Otherwise, as I said, you will probably find something else suitable at Clark Rubber.

Yep I've bought the stuff you need from clark rubber. Its a great product, Its called pinchweld, its not just a plastic, it has a bendable metal in it so it holds its shape and stays put.

Heres a link: http://www.clarkrubber.com.au/catalogsearch/result/?q=pinchweld

Pinchweld! That's the stuff. We do use that at work. It can be pretty bulky, tho for a 12" it should look alright.
There is also an edge trimming used for cutouts in panels, a search for grommet strip should work. From memory RS Components and Element14 stock various sizes down to 3mm and for various thickness sheet down to 1mm.
