Collabrative combining of raw data from fellow IIS'ers

After seeing the fantastic images from Paul H (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=97755), Martin P (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=96644)and John (dvj) (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=97781) of the Helix Neb, it got me thinking that all of you have huge amounts of data at various levels ( OIII, Ha, SII etc).

Could the three of you not exchange your data and use that to make one heck of a pic?????

Or, in the same train of thought.... other ISS'ers could start a thread and ask for contributors to start a project on a particular object? ( ie one does 25 hrs of Ha data, the other does 25 of OIII etc etc
OR......... one does 12 hrs of Ha data, another one also does 12hrs of Ha , another 12 hrs of OIII and another 12 hrs of OIII from another etc)
Does that make sense????

I realise that we all have different scopes and equipment, but I remember somewhere that two different scopes were used to make an image of the same object ( think it was M42, cant remember where i saw it....).
I understand that each individual has their own artistic twist on their pic......but that cant stop you using the data and still use your own Processing skills? Right?

So I guess my question is : Is this a feasible project?

Interesting thought, it'd probably be quicker to send a USB (or 3) via snailmail than trying to download all that data!!

Well that was a thought I had too.....can't do it online......dvd or bluray would also be an option...?
Is there something that would entice a collaboration?

It is difficult enough to match NB data with your own optics. The bright stars have coloured haloes due to the optics not being perfect.

I could imagine where a slower refractor and my RH200 could meld data to produce a very good image, could be possible.

It is a feasible idea but all participants would really have to know what they are doing!


I would be willing to collect deep data that then can be used with slower longer length APO's with far more resolution than my optic to supply the chromaticity data.

Surely if person A has made 25 hrs of Ha, and person B has made 25 hrs of OIII, ( roughly at the same time, with compatible optics) one could combine them?

Possible with a program like Registar, that easily brings different data sets together. Robert Gendler has done many image combines from different instruments. Image teams can be formed to produce large scale mosaics if the planning is done.

Unless we all use the same optics, various field curvatures would make the
trying to correct the images a non-linear process.

You need some very snazzy software to do that...as far as I know all current image processing packages only transform in a linear fashion.:question:

Pixinsight has the firepower, and it has been done before. I think this M51 project ended becoming even bigger, but can't find any more links to the final data. Would certainly require some processing, but have pondered this thought before - what if we all put our data-heads together on something

Sounds like a awesome idea. I personally would be over the moon to be able to play with those amounts of data.
