Hi all,
Of course, I had to do one of my usual panoramas during the brief aurora display for me on Tuesday night. Hope you like it.

I take my hat off to you Greg. That is just superb in so many ways.
Image of the year!
When you say 9 vertical images is that 9 wide angle shots gradually increasing the angle? Using a 14mm?
It works well.
Greg.

That is one awesome image Greg!
We had a great visual show with that Aurora and it was quite intense.
Excellent work!

Possibly the best photo I have seen all year? Seriously, INCREDIBLE!
And from NSW...!
I am in Sydney and this is enough to make me drive 6 (or more) hours south every time a CME is due to hit... is this the first time you have captured it from that latitude?

Thank you very much Laurie :D
Not sure about image of the year but I really appreciate the great feedback. Thank you very much Greg :D Yeah, so what I mean by 9 vertical images is I shoot across the horizon but I have the camera shooting portrait style. It means you can get a lot more height in the final panorama image. And yes 14mm
Thank you so much for that Mike :D
Thank you so much Mike :D Don't give up on night scapes. I'll be completely honest and say that the images you have done so far with a DSLR are genuinely a lot better than my first shots by far. It's all comes down to practice.
Thank you very much Jason :D Glad you like it.
Thank you so much Paul :D Yeah I saw that great photo you posted. Wish I was a bit further south like you for this one. If I get enough warning next time I might just keep driving until I hit Bass Straight.
Thank you so very much Geoff :D I got it the night before this night as well, but yeah, pretty much. First time getting it on camera. There has been 3 or 4 solar storms this year that I can remember that have been of the same or greater intensity and probably would have been able to be caught from this latitude but either weather or bright moon has prevented me from getting them.
Thank you very much Hugh :D
:D Thank you so much Steve :D
Thanks Rick :D

I see. So you shoot portrait orientation and go sideways across the horizon. Makes sense.
30 seconds F2.8 14mm Samyang?
I am testing a Samyang 24mm F1.4 and it looks to be very good so far.
I am also interested in their tilt/shift 24mm when it arrives at market. It looks very promising and may be good for panoramas.

Yes it was. That thing hardly leaves my camera these days/nights. Love it.
That 24mm might be my little chrissy present to myself. Sometimes the 14mm is a bit too wide for what I want to capture and the Canon 20mm F/2.8 I have has bad coma wide open. So if the 24mm is as good as the 14mm when stopped down to F/2 - F/2.8 it will certainly be on the shopping list.

I used it again last night. I have done quite a few shots now and 2 time lapses.
You can get round stars with up to 13 second exposures and ISO3200-6400 is very very bright. You get minor trailing at around 20 seconds which is similar to 30 seconds with 14mm.
Below F2 though it is not useable as there is too much chromatic aberration and seagull stars. F2.8 may also work. There is slight chromatic aberration left at F2 but it should process out easily as it is only slight.
There appears to be very little curvature although I have camera lens correction checked in the internal menus. Not sure how much effect it has though.
I think it will need a dark site to perform ideally as it picks up any light pollution quickly and makes the sky look very light.
Terrestially its an interesting lens. You can get really close to the object and it makes it look further away so it could be good for some unusual effects.
I'll be playing with it more.
Greg.

Thanks for the info Greg :D As long as it is good at F/2.8 that will be fine with me.
