Same.
Usually it's chatter in IceTrade that gets deleted.

iceman
10-10-2012, 07:06 AM
And you know Brian, you could always send a PM to a moderator and ask us, instead of posting it here?

I had a post deleted some time ago ..!!
It was in Telescopes and Mounts.

I congratulated a guy on a buying a SDM from a fellow member.
Said what a terrific ' score ' and just a superb piece of kit.

I don't think the Mods like general chat in the Classifieds ..!!

It was deleted ... even thou' the Scope was SOLD.

The TOS for classifieds is very clear - no chatter in the for sale threads.

PM the user if you have something to say.

 You to Iceman , I respect getting deleted when a PM is forth comming telling me I made a stuff up , and I have PM'd you back ( More than once ) apoligising , which it is the way to go , Because it is easy to get into a thread and forget protocol . :thanx: . as some of the threads are awsome ..:D .

:) Octane it was a discussion on 2 scopes , a 114mm and 100mm reflector's the person was looking to buy , they supplied 2 threads ;) , so it was easy to see where they were going , short on cash and wanting advice . .
I put my 5c in and suggested the 100mm as it had way better accessories , and the seller's were honest on the magnifications and said so , thats all ??? . My reply was there monday night , gone without a trace last night :mad2: . My back got up , as how is this objectionable .
Thanks again for your intrest .

I didn't think of PM'ng you  so avoided posting a comment earlier. Brian, on the audio forums I moderate on, if we have to "act" on an issue, we, out of courtesy PM the originator of the issue. Long before IIS existed we discussed how to handle difficult situations and being uncommunicative, heavy handed and dictatorial were things we deliberately chose to avoid and time has proven us wise in our decisions..........it is absolutely rare to see threads like this (something that seems to be a relatively regular occurence here) arise.

This thread makes interesting reading......... http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=87573

brian nordstrom
10-10-2012, 09:42 PM
 Thanks Chris , I have spoken to 12 or more people tonight via PM's on this issue , Interesting all right , I am waiting for a few more replies as a few comments on some threads have dissapared in the last 30 miniutes ,, . like were there 45 miniutes ago and now vanished ? scary stuff .
We will see where this goes .
Brian.

leon

Not scary Brian, it is cyber space, and nothing is private, although we are lead to believe otherwise, and IIS is no different.

i was going to keep my trap shut, but after reading this drivel by the same people over the same issues doing the same things that they know they shouldn't, eventually it all circles around and disappears up somewhere dark!

can't you just accept the verdict? the icetrade rules are there for a reason? no its not a perfect world and its certainly not a democratic site, it has rules which all of you accepted when you joined.

speaking as an ex moderator can say that the number of things that a moderator has to get through on here is a lot. having to individually reply to regular users who know the rules and continue to flaunt them - well you do the math.... not enough time in the day.

lazy way out - no - because they were busy cleaning up ice trades some spammer probably hit the site then they will have to deal with that as well?

it was certainly a huge frustration to me, burned me out really. so ask yourself this, do you really have to add a comment in ice trades?

Tandum
10-10-2012, 11:08 PM
Suck it up mate. You agreed to be a mod. Didn't they tell you it would be a pain in the arse :)

leon
10-10-2012, 11:38 PM
do you really have to add a comment in ice trades?

Actually why not, unless it interferes with the actual item being sold.

Leon

h0ughy
10-10-2012, 11:50 PM
no that was the fine print;). generally it was a great time moderating, then you get moments like these.

Leon i really think you are missing the point? lets just say that i disagree with your reality (to paraphrase a myth buster)...

barx1963
11-10-2012, 12:06 AM
Because it is specifically not allowed in the TOS!
See (taken from clause 10 of the TOS)

Please don't post replies to someone else's ad unless it's specifically related to the item - that is, if you're asking relevant questions about it, perhaps with a view to purchasing.
Keep off-topic and spam posts out of the IceTrade Classifieds. It's not going to help someone sell their gear if the threads contain off-topic posts.

and if I was trying to sell something I don't want comments cluttering up my ad. There is a whole raft of equipment fora here on IIS to give comments on gear, likes and dislikes, why clutter up someone elses ad to do that? I will confess I made a comment on an ad at one time, simply trying to be helpful to a prospective purchaser about some non astro gear that I have personal expertise about and the OP (rightly) was mighty upset about it.

Lets all just take a deep breath, maybe have a read of the TOS and try to be a little more, I dunno, relaxed. Really, its just a forum!!

Oh and there is a specific invitation in the TOS that if any member has a problem with the actions of a mod they can take it up with Mike. Of course it is his site so he can do whatever he likes on it!

All you New South Welshman and NT'ers are forgetting the big picture. You are all lucky you don't live in Melbourne, because then, a few deleted posts here and there will become a very insignificant little distant memory as you attempt to delete fossilized cobwebs from your optics

OMG I can't believe this is still going.

Still Brian has not contacted me but continues to post rubbish in this thread. It's really easy - Brian could easily look through his post history, which is exactly what I just did.

No bloody posts of his were deleted. Simple as that.

Try this one (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showpost.php?p=902156&postcount=8)
And this one (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showpost.php?p=902473&postcount=15)
Happy now? They were never deleted.

Absolute rubbish. Send me a specific example of this happening or I'm going to start getting really mad at your ridiculous claims.
Either 3 things are happening:
1. You have absolutely no idea what you posted in and what you didn't
2. You have no idea how to find the threads you posted in
3. You're trolling and purposely posting this thread, and continuing to post in this thread (without even contacting me) with the intent of causing problems.

If it's #1 or #2, a little education might help and you can apologise to myself and the moderators for the accusations and admit your own fault.
If it's #3 you'll find yourself on a permanent holiday from IceInSpace.

Seriously Leon?
The rule wasn't made up just because I felt like it. It was because people ASK for chatter to be deleted in THEIR for sale threads.
It's because some people think it's a good idea to post things like negative comments that could hurt the sale.
Even when the comments don't hurt the sale, some people think it's the seller getting their 'friends' to comment to try and make the sale look better than it really is. So it then still hurts the sale.

You can't post chatter to ads on ebay.
You can't post chatter to ads on trading post, or in the paper.
You can't post chatter to ads on IceTrade.

There's been times we've almost setup the system to completely disallow ANY comments on the IceTrade threads, simply to avoid having to have the TOS 'ask' people not to post chatter. That way it would FORCE people to ask questions via PM and we wouldn't have this issue.

People like to post their 'PM sent' etc so we haven't implemented this yet.

But when some people (Leon and Brian included) continue to post chatter in IceTrade, despite having your posts continually deleted in IceTrade, it certainly makes me think a forced system implementation would be better.

There's 22 different sub-forums you can post replies on. Don't post in IceTrade unless you're selling something or asking a question with the possible intention of buying the item. It's a really simple rule.

By way of explanation, behind the scenes us moderators can see a lot of stuff the normal members of IIS can't. We can see every post and thread that is deleted. We have our own forum where we track posts that are reported and what we do or don't do about them and why.

So its simple, Brian. All you have to do is send us a link to the thread where your post is supposed to be deleted from, and we will be able to see who deleted it (if it was) and whether or not a PM was sent, or whether the post was never there.

Keep in mind:

Just because you went through the motions typing a post, doesn't mean it made it to IIS. The same could happen with a PM, but if it made it to your sent box, I expect it would appear in the receivers Inbox being in the same system.

Al.

I would like to say one thing before this thread is closed.

I have once once or twice posted a "harmless" reply to a thread and then looked back at the thread and not seen it.

In each case a search of my posts has revealed it, posted to the wrong thread. I don't know how it happens but I expect it was a typing error on my part.

I have removed the post and re-inserted it in the right place.

Barry

PS As a moderator on another forum I know the problems and abuse that can occur. B.G.

Further to Barrys comment I have had the same experience. With so many threads and some thread attracting large volumes of posts it is very easy to lose track.
A simple search in your statistics tab will reveal all your posts.

Gentlemen and gentlewomen, we are not talking about life and death here, it is just some posts on a community forum.
I would hate to see such a wonderful resource for enthusiasts suffer or lose valuable members, the very helpful Brian N. included, over such minor issues.

Being new here I probably have and will post things in the wrong areas from time to time and if such posts get deleted or moved to other areas so be it. From what I can see the guidelines are very clear with regard to the classified section.
For sale etc ads should be just that, in fairness to each seller, there should be no extraneous comments, although I agree that "PM sent" and also "PM sent-offer only" are justifiable and also helpful posts and should be retained as they give other buyers an indication where they stand in the queue for an item. Likewise, sellers should ensure they update their ads when sold or sale pending.
If you want to endorse or disendorse an item for sale, send the interested party a PM.
If you suspect fraud or similar contact site admin.

If the mods choose to delete posts that obviously go against guidelines why should they also have to waste time justifying it by PM. If a post is deleted for other reasons then an explanation via PM ought to be made to the author only.

Above all, wherever possible these issues should be resolved via PM with site admin or mods rather than in the public forum.
From my viewpoint the mods and admin here give much more leeway than other fora I have been involved in. Now lets get back to enjoying astronomy !!!!

What a load of attention seeking rubbish from some here

Glad I'm not a mod.

Dennis

It seems that there are two types of post.

Those we like – they impart warm strokes to the ego.
Those we don’t like – they seem to challenge our very sense of who we think we are.

The ones we like, no matter how frequent or how many, cannot increase who we really are, at our core; although they certainly inflate the ego, the person we think we are.
Nor can we be diminished by those that trouble our delicate ego, unless we mistakenly believe we have somehow become less significant as a result of a post.

Better to invest in who we are at the core, rather than the fragile ego that seeks attention, wants to always be right and craves attention.

As children we called each other names and had fights in the school yard but usually made up and laughed about our foolishness.

Last week I saw a documentary about the horrific fighting in Syria.
Bombs, rockets, bullets and grenades rained down on people’s dwellings – these barbaric actions seem worthy of complaining about.
Much else seems a little precious.

Cheers

Dennis

Nah, deletes are very civilized actually. I saw the rate sheet once.
Direct deposit is fastest, CCs attract a 5% surcharge .

Post delete $20
Thread delete $100
Member ban $120
M42 pic post delete $2
Entire IIS shutdown $423,000

All except the last one, mods get a 20% cut, Mike gets the rest.
