Thinking of picking up a second hand Canon 450d or similar - really to start dabbling in dslr astrophotography without spending too much. Any pitfalls I should be aware of?

Just be aware how about shutter actuations- you could google the number before servicing required?
My 450D has done sterling service and is controllable by APT/Backyard EOS etc so make sure you get a mini USB lead with it.
It's a great camera to start with.

Thanks for the tip Graham,
Is it possible to interrogate the camera to check the number of operations/actuations?
Cheers

Some data on 450d shutter life:
http://www.olegkikin.com/shutterlife/canon_eos450d.htm
I've never tried it but this says it will check the count:

And if you're on a mac:

I know someone who got their 5d shutter repaired and it cost him about $200, not sure about a 450d though.

I recently upgraded from the 450d to a 7D. The 450d is a good camera. All my astro shots were taken with it.
