View Full Version here: : Jupiter with new processing

Hi everyone,
After the amazing improvement that Mike did to my April 17th Jupiter AVI file, I have been closely following the discussion on RGB splitting and processing on the forum.
Lacking computer skills and any whizz bang computer programs, I simply downloaded IRIS and split my Jup AVI into RGB fit. files and processed these in Registax and then AstraImage.
See the attached result or on my web site here:
http://www-us.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=140216372&size=o
Obviously way not as good as Mike's effort (will never be as good as that!):
http://www-us.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=132645809&context=set-72057594050425884&size=o
But I think better than my original:
http://www-us.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=131295537&context=set-72057594050425884&size=o
The problem however that I have enountered, (looking for advice here) is that I cannot create a reference frame in Registax with the fit. files. The problem appears to be that I cannot tick the histo-stretch box before the program proceeds onto the wavelet function. What I end up with is a black screen. Any ideas?
Also Registax does not appear to like more than 720 or so fit. files which is not ideal but workable.
Advice and comments welcome!
John.

aviraw is great to simply split colour into r,g,b videos. save first as a single rgb and then the three separate. then load up each into registax, or convert to bmp's if using ppmcentre first
I really like your reprocess. Mike in my mind has a real skill with processing. He knows where the balance of not overprocessing ie wavelets and i reckon his colours on jupiter are now spot on. As good as anyone else that i have seem on any world forum.
As i said in another thread, there are at least 7 individual ways to bring out the data and we then use a combination of each of those.
So again, practise makes perfect

Very nice processing John. I like it a lot.
After splitting your rgb into 3 with Aviraw you can also use VirtualDub to save each one as individual frames of bmps. Then drag the individual colour channel bmps as a group and drop them onto the first page of Registax.

That's a great improvement, John.
As Paul and DP said, try using "aviraw" to create 3 separate R/G/B avi's, which you can then pass through registax.

Its the first Ive heard of 'aviraw' program. Can you help with the settings in the program to make a r,g,b avi from normal avi as I can't see how to do it in the program. IE I need a dummy's guide cos I'm dense

http://arnholm.org/astro/software/aviraw/ for aviraw. It is usually used to convert videos captured in raw mode back to colour mode.
here is a screen shot.
load up up video (top left button)
save as single rgb (next button)
save as 3 individual r,g,b (next button)
these button are left of the ? mark button

oh and make sure you have the latest registax 3.0.1.24

Many thanks for that. I will try ASAP. Does it matter that I have not captured the avi in RAW mode in the first place as initially it appears that I have patterning over the frames when they are split into the r,g, and b avis?

This is of great help, thanks.
Downloaded AVIRAW last night and just grabbed V24 for Registax (yep, V23 did not work, had to use VirtualDub to reave) so seeing the weather is so bad in Melbourne tonight will do some processing with AVI's.
What is ppmcentre, where can I download this and what are its advantages? How PC literate do you have to be to use it?
Thanks again
John.

it is a little hard. i have not played with the latest version.
the question is does your image move a fair bit around the screen during capture?
having said that, now that bird has added stacking to this program, it may replace a fair bit of registax??
Dave. Why do you save first as a single rgb, before splitting into 3 separate??? When you're only going to be working on the r,g,b avi's anyway?

for some reason aviraw won't save separate r,g,b unless you have pressed the single one first.
it is wierd???

I have used the RGB method to reprocess another one of my AVI's from April and I think there is a definite improvement from the original:
My Original processing at 75%:
http://www-us.flickr.com/photos/johnkazanas/141348419/in/set-72057594050425884/
RGB Method 150 frames at 100%
http://www-us.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=141336365&context=set-72057594050425884&size=o
RGB Method 250 Frames at 150% (Mitchell Resampling in Registax)and propably overkill
http://www-us.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=141336366&context=set-72057594050425884&size=o
As can be seen my gamma setting of 50% with the Nextimage camera are defenitely not the way to go.
ppmcentre sounds interesting and my AVI's do jump all over the place, so I did download it inc. instructions.
Very basic question....How do I get this program to go to the command line in Windows so I can enter the commands?

i love that moon in the resample well done!
to get to the command prompt, click on "ms dos prompt" or "command line" under prgrams -> accessories
or press start>run and them type cmd.
if your planet by itself image scale is not too big, ie more than 400 pixels, then a simple:
ppmcentre -outdir=out will cut to 400px high by 400 px wide
to get a pre-registax quailty sort happening, assuming all the bmp's has number on the end ir jup001, jup002 etc
ppmcentre -outdir=out -qestimator -renumber=last
etc
by the way, it can get messy with ppmcentre and moons that are not pretty close to the planet

Hi John, I really like your reprocess, esp the moon (Ganymede?). Hope you go well with PPM centre, I keep meaning to make the leap, but I'm command line challenged:D

This thread has provided some great info.
Thanks for the comments Robert, can't promise anything at all with ppmcentre, my PC skills are as bad as they can get do will be a while!
Dave, many thanks again for all the info.
John.
