This is a composition of 2 photographs, one focused on the moon and the other on the branch. A quick cut and past in CS6 to have both subjects in focus.
Is there a way photographically that I could have had both subjects in focus? or is my method more or less the only way?
Canon 60d
EFS 18-200mm
Thanks and enjoy your Friday :)

You would need to set your aperture to F22 and then focus at the hyperfocal distance to have a chance to get both into acceptable focus.
When you set the focus at a given point that is the only point that is in focus, however depending on your focal length and aperture, there is an area that is in 'acceptable' focus, that is, it is out of focus by an amount that is too small for our eyes to notice.
Hyperfocal distance is the nearest point of focus to you that still keeps infinity in focus,
For example:
Your near subject is 30 cm away, your far subject is at infinity, Using a Canon 60D with 18mm lens set on F22. You focus the lens at 77.3cm in manual focus mode and you will get near and far subject in acceptable focus. Wide angle lenses at small apertures like F22 give the greatest depth of field.
(I have purposely not referred to depth of focus as opposed to depth of field)
Oh and I like the photo

Cheers Laurie :)
Thanks for that great explanation Matt :) it makes sense to me, from memory I remember increasing the f/settings but needing to counter the darkness by increasing the exposure which required a steady hand or a tripod. Most of those images were blurry due to my movement and shacky hands ... But now to go out and put your advice into practice! Thank you and I'm glad you like it too! :thanx:
Now Carlos, that is a beauty, lovely foreground, well done indeed.
