I recently asked for opinions on IIS regarding a Canon EF 70-300mm L lens which seemed quite favourable but at around the $1300 -$1500 mark I was a bit reluctant to buy one. While on ebay I came across a new Tamron AF 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD MACRO lens for $170 inc. free postage from Hong Kong. Because it has the same basic specs (not the quality) as the Canon lens, $170 didn't seem a great outlay. Here are the results, all hand held shots from 30-40 feet away, 250-300mm FL. I think the fact that the lens was fitted to my Canon 5D MkII might have something to do with these relatively pleasing shots. The last shot is a crop of the preceding image.

Nothing wrong with that lens, Steve!

Not bad fora 170 bucks, you may want to try a higher f stop just to increase the depth of field a bit and it will most likely make the shots that bit crisper as well. Those lower light shots will stand an ISO bump to 200 or even 400 to keep the shutter speed up and you won't really notice it.
Love the cat shot and the last bird shot, the crop shows the focus is very good.
Have fun with it

Thanks Laurie and Ken, my shots were taken on the spur of the moment but nextime I'll pay attention to aperture, ASA, F ratios and all that stuff I learnt many years ago. Considering the lens is a relative "cheapie" I may keep it. It doesn't have IS but armed with my tripod and shutter controller I would like to see what it can deliver.
I take it Ken that you may be a cat lover? If so, you and I know what my cat is looking at!

Here you go Steve, my boys out for a walk, they like to look at the rosella's here so we keep a close eye on them.
Cheers
Well Steve for that price the quality is quite good, maybe not as sharp as some, but excellent captures.
