I love this "new feature" in IOS 6
"It’s even easier to add photos and videos to email messages"
Funny, 8 months ago I was complaining that it didnt have this feature, but the response from others was, why would you ever need to be able to attach pictures to messages? You just go to your photo and select send. :screwy:
Octane

I'll send them an email and ask them to remove the feature. :P
You could always copy and paste pictures into emails. But, since iOS 5 (I think) they introduced the share button in the photos app (and, elsewhere) to be able to easily send pictures (or, whatever) via email or MMS.

Pretty good early impressions, although the Apple maps is rather ... underdeveloped compared to what we had.
And strangely my iPhone 4S keeps losing Wifi connectivity and dropping back to 3G.
Hahaha
I love the 'who's copying who?' arguments in the smartphone world.

Methinks upgrading on the day iOS6 was released is taking one's life in one's hands. I'll give it a few weeks, or maybe wait for the inevitable .0.1 or .1 patch level.

I'm a Mac lover for sure, but the iPad (first generation) I have won't play with IOS6, and my iPhone 4 doesn't seem any different with it either. Most features are designed for the later/latest models by the look of it.

Upgraded to iOS 6 on my iPad 3. Everything went/is fine. The maps app seems to me to run very smoothly but does have less details. The settings screen seems to take slightly longer to come up. There are some great locking features I love for the kids. Mixed success with Siri so far. Worth upgrading as far as I can see.

It also now has turn-by-turn navigation - alleviating the need to buy Navigon, Tom Tom or other app. With Siri it now has voice control, and 3D rendering. I hit the home button yesterday arvo and told Siri: "Take me to Cairns".
Siri: "One moment.... "
Pop - map to Cairns comes up from my present location.
Map Girl: "Take the next turn left at...."
Pretty cool in my book :)

I have better things to do than waste a few hours updating my phone to have little or no gain. I'll wait till it is essential.
Does anyone actually use "siri" or is it just a gimmic?

That's really interesting Chris, so did Apple lie? Or do you have a special version?
http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/article/436574/australia_getting_turn-by-turn_navigation_ios_6_next_month/
Apple has confirmed Australian users of iOS 6 will get access to the turn-by-turn navigation feature in its new Maps app from October.
The October availability comes after Australia was originally left off the list of countries that the turn-by-turn navigation feature would be available in.
Last week, Apple published an iOS 6 availability list by region, as some features of its new operating system are not available in every country.
The company has since updated this iOS 6 features list (http://www.apple.com/ios/feature-availability/#maps-turn-by-turn-navigation) with confirmation that turn-by-turn navigation in the Maps app will be available in Australia next month.

Never really used it before Terry - but I tried it last night while it was on the dash in my car. I hit the button and said "Take me to twenty five Darling Street Rozelle" - and it brought the map straight up and started to navigate. Even with ambient noise in the car, it just worked. Any voice recognition is always hit and miss because of variations in noise levels, accents, cadence - but it worked. In these situations, where you need hands free and really shouldn't be typing away on a navigator's screen entering directions as you drive - which many people do, then yes, I can see a use in this instance. Apart from that, not sure, but it's interesting how deeply engrained it is into the system.

The upgrade on my ipad2 went fine and everything is working great sofar:thumbsup:
Hey Chris,
Did the update last night.
I tried to use the turn by turn navigation today, and I didn't work on my iPad 2 or iPhone 4S. Which was frustrating to say the least. Now I read that it is availiable in october on the link below, which brings the question on why yours works. Do you have a ios6 beta that has the option of turn by turn?
Ta
Brett
A friend of mine just took a snapshot of this on his phone:
http://i49.tinypic.com/10ruxl5.jpg
He hates iPhones and thinks it's funny, I have to be honest, I don't get what is funny?
Omaroo
21-09-2012, 07:05 PM
Dunno Brett. Works on both my iPhone 4 (not 4S) and iPad 3 - and you have to have asked for directions! When you look up an address or landmark and it displays the map - there is a "left turn" hook icon top left. Hit that. Select whether you want directions from another secondary address, or from your current location. Hit Start. Pretty simple?
The maps are actually very clear - and the thing I like is that you can flick/scroll the over-sized signposts at the top of the screen, and you are scrolled along the route to where they are each describing their way point. Works very well.

I couldn't get it working last night driving from Queanbeyan to Wanniassa.
I pulled over several times to look up how to videos until I found a post by an Apple spokeswoman that said that we'll get turn-by-turn voice guidance in October.
For now, you drive along, and the distance to the next turn, doesn't decrement; once you pass it, it just displays the next turn with the actual distance to it remaining static.
Can't wait for the full blown thing next month. Until then, I have Navigon.
Omaroo
21-09-2012, 08:04 PM
Ah - OK. I guess that I don't use my TBT navigators the same way - I run them silently. All I want to know is how for it is to to the next turn, and what road it's on. I like the way it is now, but I can see why others want full countdowns and voice prompts.

Is the clock a new feature on the iPad?
Omaroo
21-09-2012, 08:16 PM
Yep - and it should have been there since day one like it has been on the phone. Crazy. Very nice though :)
I did the same as H.
Googling frantically and youtubing to work out what button I was missing to get the spoken directions... looking forward to october as this was the main upgrade I wanted out of ios6, and cellular FaceTime.
As it is I like the new apple maps more than the google ported maps. My house isn't even on the google maps and it was built around 5 years ago.
Thanks for the reply, Chris.

That's OK Brett. I'm in, as you know, a Landrover. You can't hear squat, so I don't use voice. October for what you were after - that's not too far off. I agree with you about the quality of the maps themselves - they're very clear and far better than Google's in that regard.

Before I think about this upgrade I have a question. When it installs the new maps thing, does it remove the google maps or is it there as a choice still?
Omaroo
22-09-2012, 08:46 AM
Unfortunately you lose the Google Maps app. There is no choice. If there are certain aspects of it that the new system doesn't cater to, which are critical to your life, then maybe you should wait.

I don't know if it will download via a mobile broadband connection, but mine downloaded the last major IOS5 update all by itself. No idea if it was over my WiFi at home or over 3G as it is a work phone, but I did not get a nastygram from work for crushing my data allowance.

As I understand it, downloading the iOS can only be done over WiFi, in fact IIRC anything (in terms of app at least) over 50 megs needs a wiFi or computer connection.
Anyway, I'm all updated to iOS6 on all the devices that will accept the new OS (my poor iPad can't be updated, maybe time to get a new iPad *grin*) and it's nice.
Octane

I can confirm that iOS (6) will only download over a WiFi connection as I had a dodgy Internet connection over the weekend. Whenever it dropped out, my device stopped downloading the update.
Unless you're being sneaky and sharing your 3G connection via a personal hotspot (and connecting to it via Wi-Fi on another device), it won't download.

My wife mentioned that last night actually.
I'd only updated her iPhone 4S earlier that day and by the end of the night it had chewed through more battery than the previous day (same usage).

the same can be said for the ipod - mine is resource hungry and seems to have a lot shorter battery life. I will also note that i upgraded the 11" air last weekend (latest update for lion which has the new itunes - and what a dog that is) and that is eating through the battery life on that as well so i wonder if there is a connection there somehow? i used to be able to get 4-5hours out of it - now i am lucky to get 4 hours tops and thats within 4 days of loading it.

There may be an issue with the iPhone 5 camera giving purple flares (http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2012/10/apple-acknowledges-iphone-5-camera-problem-says-youre-holding-it-wrong/) as well.
But at least there are lots of iPhone 4's for sale 2nd hand.
And seeing they are all for sale at the same time, prices are reasonable :)
I've bought 2 so far and should get a third tomorrow :)

Sorry I didn't see your post earlier. What Adrian mentioned will fix it.
Are you using a Netcomm router? I was having an issue with dropouts and having to re-enter my password all the time. But, the problem didn't happen on other routers.
I found the solution to be to enter the wireless details manually once. Then, it would maintain the connection permanently. Something strange about that Netcomm router.

I think I was a bit premature with the iPhone IOS6.0.1 fix. It appeared to work for a little while now I am back to entering the network password every few minutes. After reading reports on the net it appears that
1. A compatibility problem with my Netgear DG834PN router or
2. The iPhone itself as a hardware problem (bad batch?)
If it was a car or toaster or microwave or.......... And it didn't deliver the promises made by the manufacturer it would be recalled and replaced/repaired but it appears that some manufacturers can get away with selling/supplying goods that are not fit for service. I have tried Apple Service with no luck as the person I spoke to says he is not aware of any problems with update.

Adrian,
Do what I did:
Go into wireless settings and choose to set up a manual connection (regardless of the fact that the phone can see your existing wireless connection).
Fill in the wireless key details and your password, and, then you should be good to go. Mine's working flawlessly, now.

I doubt it's the Netgears fault, A friend at work has had slow / unreliable wifi connections on his iPad 3 since the iOS6 upgrade and that's on both a Netgear and an Apple Airport Extreme wifi router. My one remaining Apple product, an iPad, was updated to iOS4 and that slowed it down enough that I decided not to update it any further.

Had the update since mid october. Some observations.
Siri and maps works a real treat. Never wrong and it counts down distances really well. I like the turn by turn feature.
The panorama feature in the camera is superb. Very sharp and is very even on lighting. It makes one of my apps redundant.
The wifi to cars issue is a problem though. I cannot use the paddles on my stearing well to change music up or down in the phone (ipod function). Apparently this is a world wide issue and affects all cars to varying degrees. I was lucky my phone still works from what I read with regard to wifi connections.
Overall a good update but now I need to update te stereo because apple will not sort the problem it caused. Straight from Apple.
