It appears a new spam source has just started up. Five new postings this morning on this board and three on my nzmeccano forum.

Yep, this has been going on for years... Many online forums use similar software behind the scenes, so spammers have created programs that can automatically fill out the standard registration and posting pages.

There's definitely a new source lately that is bypassing most of the regular blockers and checks.

I'm banning many more of them every day over the last few weeks.

Most times they're banned before they even post, but today they got through as the moderators were out enjoying our Sundays :)
