The geyser seen in the previous shots erupts at regular 20 minute intervals for around 5 minutes. In between bursts the scene is quiet with a few steamers puffing away here and there. The conditions in winter are cold enough for ice to form and persist downstream from the geyser - driven west by the wind.

Very interesting image! I wonder what that place is like without a bright moon.
Dark I bet.

Very dark once the Milky Way set. I have some moonless images, but a bit disappointed I didn't take more. It's always the way in hindsight from a comfortable heated room. That's a 1/3 moon.

Thanks guys.
I have another from the same spot where I accidentally left my red head light on and it coloured the ice in such a way to make it look organic and alien!
