My one and only nightsky scape from my recent trip to Tasmania and about the only time I saw the stars. It was either raining or just cloudy for most of the time. About half an hour after I did this shoot the clouds rolled back in. The faint bands and patches in the sky are from thin cloud so even for this shot I didn't have completely clear skies. Crescent moon just off to the top right of frame is lighting up the landscape.
I had a star trail shoot in progress before I did this but after only 15 minutes or so a couple of guys came down the road to launch their boat and seeing as I was setup in the water at the end of the boat ramp I had to move.

I'm scratching my head on these shots. Is this is single shot color image? There is a huge amount of signal and color saturation in the milky way, yet the foregroud looks like it is under moonlight. It's a beautiful image, but a real mystery to me how it is done.

Thank you so much Greg, John, Mike and Colin :D I'm glad you all like it. Colin hit the nail on the head John. The moon was at that magic phase when it is bright enough to light up the landscape nicely but not too bright to wash out the Milky Way.
I should have also pointed out that this is a vertical panorama made from 6 horizontal images which was originally a lot wider and included the moon, but I cropped it down as I felt the blown out moon was dominating the shot.

Ahhhh, a panorama! With the moon magic, that is where the expanse of the field comes from.

Yes it's a panorama John, but after cropping out the amount that I did, I could probably get this same field of view with a single vertical image with the wide angle lens that I have.
