I took this on a previous Chilean trip and just noticed it today so thought I'd post. It's from near the end of a timelapse and close to the border with Bolivia. Earlier in the sequence thundery cloud and lightning is visible, which leads me to think the object is a high altitude Sprite. The yellowy/brown sky is natural airglow.

Hi Colin,

Well done, this is certainly a thunderstorm sprite! Was this with a standard or modified camera?

Thanks Terry. Unmodded 5DmkII. I think the settings were f/2.8, 20s, iso 3200, 24mm.

That's extremely cool.:cool2:

I don't think there would be many people around who could say they have caught a sprite on camera.

Amazing, it definitely looks like a sprite! There are not many photos of these, what a catch. Congratulations! :)

Wow, what a rare catch. Now you need to photograph the Green Flash and you have the set :-)

Unique capture! There was an APOD with a sprite from ISS recently but I reckon it is much more difficult to catch from Earth.

Well done spotting it a year later too!

Cheers,
Alex
