Hey everyone.

Has anyone here bought anything under $1000 from USA or overseas?

Can I just go to the online store, purchase the item + shipping and thats it or is there something hidden?

I found this statement online. After reading the statement I think you don't need anything extra unless I am mistaken? Anyone here bought something from overseas under 1k?

Thanks!

Imported goods valued at or below A$1000

Generally, there is no requirement to pay duty and Goods and Services Tax (GST) on imported goods valued at or below A$1000, except for alcohol (refer to Example 2 where Wine Equalisation Tax (WET) is also payable) and/or tobacco products (refer to Example 4).

Imported goods with a value at or below A$1000 that arrive by air or sea cargo will require a self-assessed clearance (SAC) declaration to be lodged with Customs and Border Protection.

There are no Customs and Border Protection charges for making a SAC declaration.

For more information about SAC declarations see the fact sheet Self-assessed Clearance (SAC) Declarations.

Goods with a value at or below A$1000 that arrive by post do not require a SAC declaration.

For more information on goods that arrive in Australia by post click on importing goods by post.

I have bought many things from the USA and as long as it is below $1,000 it has always just come through, as long as it isn't a prohibited item.

But, BEWARE! The $1,000 limit includes the cost of freight etc. It is worked out on the TOTAL price of goods AND shipping and any other cost. Also make sure you take the exchange rate into consideration as this can push the price above the $1,000 mark.

One other caveat.....make sure you are dealing with a reputable company.

Cheers Peter

Thanks mate!

So if you buy your item, pay the shipping all that goes through, is there a charge for the item once it comes into Australia to your door or is that included in the shipping?

Freight is usually to your door. I have never encountered any other costs.

Cheers Peter

Stefan ... go for it ... as Stardrifter indicated .. watch his pointers on cost etc' and you'll avoid any additional import cost.

I've imported myself ... MoonLite Focuser and other Scope accessories ...below the $1k mark ... straight to my front door ... no more to pay.

You should have no worries.

As long as it's not a Laser-Pointer, like everyone else - no problems.
Just shows up in the post.
