View Full Version here: : A fairly deep Helix

Given the fullness of the moon there isn't much to do at the moment except narrowband. For some reason I've never taken an image of the Helix with the 12.5" Ritchey Chretien so I thought I would try and go fairly deep with a 3nm Hydrogen Alpha filter. This is over 10 hours. Conditions were mainly okay but the seeing was a bit variable.

Cheers

Steve

I like how well you've captured the cometary globs. Good one

Thanks Peter. I used the Pixinsight wavelets process which seems to yield good results for this sort of thing.

That's a great image with lots of detail, nice one Steve!
I have never tried the Helix either, it was way too big for my old 640x480 chip, and I haven't gotten around to it with the new camera yet :)

Hey, the Helix is worth hammering with a bit of exposure Steve, a good field size assists too as the outer really faint stuff just keeps on going....this is a great first 10hrs mate, plenty of detail

I hammered this with the Starfire a couple of years ago actually, taking a total of some 33hrs all up (used 27 odd in the end), total of seven nights travelling back and forth setting up and pulling down :scared: at my dark sky site about 1hr out of Newie, over a 6 week period or so.......I'll never try something like this again :scared: :screwy: ...unless I have an observatory.....:prey:...or at least the scope in my own backyard  ;)

Look forward to the colour version  :)

Thanks Humayun. I look forward to seeing some of your stuff.

Thanks Mike. Hope I don't have to go to 33 hours and I have an observatory. I remember your version which stands out as one of the great helix shots. I assume a home observatory is on the cards when you move.

Great detail in this Steve

If you are going to do narrowband on this, be warned that this has almost no SII emission. I had to get 25 hours worth to get even the slightest signal.

cheers

Yeh? gee thanks :P

Oh yeh, an observatory is certainly on the cards...perhaps a Sirius Dome even

Thanks Ross

There's nothing like having an observatory

Thanks Martin. Yikes! 25 hours! I think you just turned me off narrowband. I'll probably just do RGB with perhaps some OIII. In fact your colleague Bill Snyder suggested a bi-colour would look very nice.

Thanks Ted

I am looking forward to the balance of this image. Already it is a cracker. With the addition of the OIII component and RGB it ought to be something else.
