Photoshop Question Please

Hi Guys, I have a question to the more experienced, in a procedure in Photoshop.

If one has a photo of and object, say a single plane, which has a blue sky background, how dose one change the background of this particular image.

Some assistance would be much appreciated.

Do you intend to replace the background entirely with another image of a cloudy sky (for example), or, do you want to just alter the colour of the existing sky without altering the plane?

Like what H said it depends on what you want to do, if changing the whole background then you are about to spend a long time with the polygonal selection tool :)

Zoom in a select that whole plane bit by bit and then do anything you want with it.

Not the only way but this is what I do sometimes for a quick and dirty method
Use the Quick Select tool and select the plane. Click Edit in Quick Mask mode
You can now add or remove pixels along the edges, using the black or white brush
Zoom in and soften the edges if you want.
Press Q to make selection then copy the selection then do Layer...New Layer via copy.
You now have the plane on its own layer.
Open another image and select all then copy the selection.
Go back to the original image and do another new layer via copy.
You now have a new image but cannot see the plane. In the layer panel, drag the mask (plane layer) to the top above the new image.
You can now select the plane and move it anywhere you want on the new image.

Like I said Leon, quick and dirty but it works.

Bugger, you beat me.
In that case do everything above up unto pressing Q to make a selection.
Instead of copying and making a new layer, just make the selection, invert the selection and fill the background with whatever colour you want

Or, if you have enough colour contrast between background and object you can try this method.

Create a new hue/saturation adjustment layer. Go to the blue channel and then click the eye dropper to sample the blue background (just click on a bit of sky). Then use the hue, saturation and lightness bars to change the colour to what you want.

Then you can tweak the selected colour by playing with the sliders on the rainbow coloured bars at the bottom of the adjustment window - this allows you to narrowly select the colour you wish to change.

Now if you have some dodgy edges or areas that changed colour on the object you can simply brush these out in the mask of the adjustment layer.

This is a simple method but can be effective. Also allows you to go back and easily change the colour whenever you like.
