That's a great movie
The TV show Firefly and the movie Serenity is the only time since becoming an adult I've wished a fictional universe could be real.
Obviously Stargate too (only SG-1, the rest are just drama in costume), it's the first sci-fi to reach a wide audience (Star Trek never really reached the general population).

+1 for the Fifth Element.
Simply awesome movie......
Do yourself a favour and watch it. I bet you won't just watch it once, you'll be back for more like David says.
Cheers

Looks like I am going to hire Fifth Element this weekend. Have not seen it.
My favourite is The Matrix.

"Forbidden Planet" - Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' with awesomely powerful dead aliens. Un-remakeable.
"Sunshine" - Better than it's reviews (IMHO).

Aliens goes okay ;)
Apollo 13 is a cracker and I really enjoyed Event Horizon and Solaris (both versions). I know they're both pretty crap but I liked Pitch Black and especially The Chronicles of Riddick (so take my recommendations with a grain of salt).
+1 for the Fifth Element, Sunshine and Serenity.

I like the Impact. The moon was hit by dwarf and it becomes so much heavy that it was about to collide with earth. Its a tv series made in two part and I show on TV in 2008.

A few oldies but classics...plus a couple of strays...
The original 1951 version of "The Day The Earth Stood Still." (Michael Rennie.)
(The new one is rubbish, so don't even bother viewing it.)
Forbidden Planet. (Leslie Nielsen.)
War of The Worlds. (Gene Barry.)
Dark Star. (by John Carpenter.)
Contact. (Jodie Foster.)
2012. (John Cusack.) ((A bit over the top with the graphics but reasonable, if you like that kind of stuff.))
Blade Runner. (Harrison Ford.)
Brain Storm. (The late & great, Natalie Wood. Her last, unfinished movie.)
Just a few that I have on my HDD.

Blade Runner for sure
Star Trek, the movie - love the new start
Sunshine
2001 - despite all the melodramatic music it was a paradigm shift when it came out. Not so keen on 2010.
Star Wars - just for sheer escapism
5th Element .
Aliens, the Prequel - although mainly for the cool CGI effects
I'm a def SciFi fan so there are heaps of others or fantasy world movies( Avatar eg ) which I enjoy for whatever their genre may be. And the mood i feel in at the time.

no one's mentioned Silent Running ?
Serenity and Riddick votes for me, guilty pleasures all!
Contact.
I quite liked Enemy Mine when it came out -Dennis Quaid on a lonely planet with his sworn alien enemy (a remake of an old WW2 movie I think with Lee Marvin in it) Probably dated effects now but good story all the same.
Live long and Vespa!

Absolutely love Firefly. Great series, great lines, ended way before its time.
Currently loving Thursday nights on Channel 11, 3 episodes of Star Trek Next Gen. Like being a teenager again.

Not sure if it counts.
But "The Dish" - Great Australian film, space related.
cool collection - thanks all - and thanks for asking, Panos
not mentioned, yet, but I like:
The Red Dwarf - UK TV Series in a space ship. silly and gay.
Close encounters of the third kind.
And here's the link to imdb.com's Sci-Fi category, sorted by user rating.
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?genres=sci_fi&sort=user_rating,desc&start=1&title_type=feature
When the rating is high, I also always like the movie. :)
(But a lot of movies get mediocre ratings which I find awesome. )

I saw Silent Running recently. I wanted the orange tube SCT scope that he was using to observe Earth from the orbit of Saturn.
No wonder some people have an unrealistic expectation of the capabilities of our telescopes.
+1 for The 5th Element, brilliant movie. Have lost count the number of times I have watched it. French/British collaboration. Costumes were designed by Jean Paul Gaultier, and it works.
+1 for Serenity (which was on TV last night ;) ) and the series Firefly, by Joss Whedon who did Buffy and Angel. Don't let that put you off if you didn't like Buffy/Angel, Whedon's humor is way better suited to Firefly. Brilliant.
Also love Red Dwarf, looking forward to season X which will be airing in the UK soon on Dave (channel named after Lister ;) )

War of The Worlds (both versions)
The Thing (50's version)
Solaris
K Pax (not quite SciFi, but great)
The Keep
Anything Star Trek!
The Dish
Invaders from Mars (1950's)
The Mysterians (great Japanese scifi movie of '60s)
Outer Limits series
Apollo 13
some that come to mind, but there's lots more :)

How about the 1964 classic 'Robinson Crusoe on Mars'.
Watch out for Adam West (from the original Batman series), and have hours of fun shouting out the technical inaccuracies.
google it !
