Was browing the Teds Camera website today http://www.teds.com.au/
Noticed down the bottom of the page they have a tips section. One of the tips is

If you are shooting in to the sun make sure your subject is between you and the sun
Could be wrong but that gives us about 150,000,000 of leeway!!:P

So that would also imply it would not be wise to attempt to capture a transit
of Venus when Venus is on the opposite side of the Sun to the observer.
