I do like some of the electronic/spacey/ambient music e.g.
- Brian Eno's "Apollo Suite"
- Some tracks by Vangelis (e.g. the theme music to Carl Sagan's TV series, Albedo 0.39, The Motion of Stars, The soundtrack to the Movie "Blade Runner)

( I know that some other astro people like the spacey music of Tangerine Dream, and Kitarro, but I am not so keen on them)
"Ambient" music works better for me, because with 10 years of musical training in classical music, I find that something with strong emotions is music that I must listen to very intently , and this defeats the very purpose of having "background music".

My usual listening is :

- traditional blues (improvised)(loose, jazzy)(afro-american)(rarely at a faster tempo than a fast walking pace)(NOT blues played by rock musicians!)

- southern soul

- funk

- gospel (here I mean gospel music as a musical style, rather than necessarily with religious words).

However, I find that these four musical styles emphasize strong emotions and passions, rather than the calmness and tranquillity which I feel are the necessary background for viewing the stars!
