This is my Jupiter effort from this morning between breaks of high clouds at approx. 3:45am local time. I'm starting to get some good results using the barlow, just need to get that speck of dust off the chip :mad2:
Setting were 1/25th shutter, approx 60% brightness, 25% gain, little/no gamma, 75% saturation, 15fps, 60sec avi.

Wow that's a great shot Andrew, it's huge!
Get the can of compressed air! I'm sure you can pick them up from any electrical or automotive store (maybe)?
its coming right for us! :eyepop:
great shot! :)
you can get compressed air from DSE too.

Well done Andrew.......of course its Huge Mike...its 300 times the size of Earth.....lol
Dust gone....

Thanks Tony, was that just a bit of manual photoshop/gimp magic or did you use a program to blend it in?

Nice shot, some fine detail in there, I recommend that you go through the avi and remove the blurry frames and then restack and do the wavelets. This will give a much better shot. Still a great shot and now i want to get my scope going again.

Nah just a bit of clone action to get rid of the dust spots.....

Just did some tweeking to the image, what do you think? The dust is a problem, but am sure that this avi contains some very sharp images.

I will get rid of the dust and blend the back ground.
woops missed a bit of dust...brb...done

Hhmmm, to be honest its just a bit too red/pinkish Paul, I prefer the more pale natural looking original. Will reprocess as suggested shortly.
Dust will be dealt with by the w/end.

Don't you ever work Tony:p
Andrew how hard did you push the waveletting in the original. If its a good take on the night I've found that Jupiter can really handle some heavy waveletting.

I've tried reprocessing, weeding out some of the poorer frames, but they're all very similar - conditions weren't all that great due to the high cloud rolling over at the time, originally planned on starting at about 2am but was clouded over, checked again at 3:30ish and it had cleared up some what, but still the occasional band of cloud passing over. Paul R, I worked the wavelets as much as I normally do - as much as the image will take before it starts to look grainy/overprocessed, I'm happy to sacrifice a tiny bit of detail to keep a more overall natural look to the images. Considering the raw frames I'm more then happy with the final image I came up with, my best Jupiter yet!
Raw frames..

Andrew even on the raw frames it looks great, focus must have been so close to spot on. If you care to to do it, I would love to get hold of a zipped copy of the edited avi. Just to play around with.

Yep no problem Paul. I've pushed the avi as much as I can, would be good to see what others can do to compare my processing skills to..
avi (http://comethunter.com/images/220205jupiter.zip) its about 6.6meg

Great shot Andrew. It would be great to capture detail as fine as that.

Hey CH.
Thanks for uploading your avi.. Man I wish I had raw frames like that, and at that HUGE image scale!
Here's my attempt at processing.. I think it reveals more details, but you may not like the colour or the harder edges.. In the end it's personal preference and of course you'll process it how you like. It was fun processing a great avi, thanks.
I used ~600 frames and adjusted wavelets in registax, and then split/deconvoluated/recombined the RGB components in AstraImage.

No trouble at all Ice. Still waiting on RR to put up his attempt....:evil2: :P

Andrew I'm interested in the size of your avi. For a 60 sec, 900 frame avi my files end up somewhere between 100 and 300 mb (either saturn or jupiter) and usually between 30 and 90 mb zipped, not 7mb as your's is unzipped. Had I been taking this image at the size it is I wouldn't have been surprised to end up with an avie of around 500 mb. Have you compressed your's at all? What capture program are you using? This may be why you're not able to get as fine a detail as you like.

23-02-2005, 12:25 PM
hhmm, interesting thought Paul! The capture program I use is the 'QuickCapture' feature of the Logitech Quickcam suite that comes with the camera. I'm not doing any compressing of the avi, but thats not say the program isn't automatically...something to look into!
I've tried using K3CCDtools to capture with but had problems with saving the avi's on the laptop - the file is written but it contains no data... I wonder if thats due to the laptop having trouble with the larger (100meg+) files that it should be creating... laptop is a 1.4Ghz Centrino with 512 RAM.....
I'll be looking into it now thats for sure!!

Sorry Andrew, will try to do it this afternoon, unfortunately I put my back out again last night and am in agony right now. I promise I will get to it soon.
you need to get a smaller scope paul! :)
if only to save your back!

Well here it is, my processing of the AVI; pardon the clumsy attempt at cloning out the dust speck. Processed with stack of 69 frames, deconvolution in astra image, colour and despeckle and brightness, contrast in photoshop.
What do you think Andrew?
Comet Hunter
23-02-2005, 05:36 PM
Looks good Paul! only 69 frames? I've tried reprocessing mine a few times again but cant quiet get back to the same level as the first image...
Got my can of air today to deal with the dust issue, just need clear skies now, a few clouds atm but hopefully they'll clear by tonight :astron:

The clouds persisted on staying last night so I took the oppertunity to sort out this low file size fiasco with the QC. Nuked the laptop and did fresh install of Win XP and only a few astro programs installed (cartes du ciel etc).
I then did some tests of 60sec dark avi's (cover left on camera), 15fps. The QC suite still only saved 7 odd meg files while K3CCDtools now seems to be working correctly . Using the default compression codec 'Cinepak' resulted in 775 frames out of 899 being dropped = approx 4meg file. I changed the codec to 'Logitech Video' which resulted in 17 frames dropped from 899 = approx 97meg file. I then tried 'Full Frame (UnCompressed)' which gave 50 frames dropped (all were after ~30sec mark into the 60sec recording) out of 898, but weights in at 186meg.
Version of K3CCDTools is 1.0.6.460, I know its a very old version but it doesn't have the registration requirements the newer versions do ;).
Hopefully testing of real world targets produce similar results and not the lock ups/file problems that plagued me previously.

that sounds more like it Andrew. Lets see if that makes a difference in the ability to push your waveletting.
Good luck

Where are you setting this?
Comet Hunter
24-02-2005, 01:43 PM
ok, just realised it was in 320x240 :ashamed:, up'ed it to 640x480 and :eyepop:
Logitech codec - 19 dropped/899 - 387MB!!
Full Frame (Uncompressed) - 74 dropped/898 - 724MB!!!
Definately a step up from my piddly little 6meg files! :confuse3:

Ice, not sure what the current versions of K3CCDTools are like but my version has it in Options->Settings-> this opens a window that has 'Video Capture' tab selected and in here is a button labelled 'Compress...' This opens another window 'Video Compression' where you can select different codecs/compressors - mine has 9 different codecs to choose from...

hmm thanks, I can't open it at work because I don't have a webcam hooked up :bashcomp:
I'll try tonight and see what mine is set to.
At the moment, I get a 90meg file for about 13 seconds of video @ 15fps (approx 200 frames). So it seems fairly uncompressed.
And I don't get any dropped frames.
Comet Hunter
24-02-2005, 01:58 PM
A 13sec 15fps Full Frame setting gives me 0 dropped/193 frames at weigthing in at 169meg
