Hi all

I just took the time to put a short focal length eyepiece onto the Jewel Box. (5mm Lanthanum ep + 16 inch newtonian, giving 360x, 7min 30sec field, condtions ok). I see - but apparetnly not 'observe' - the system every clear night as a finder object for a nearby faint variable - that I definately do 'observe'.

The center looked interwoven with dust lanes. A fact not noticed before by me. Have others noticed this? I'm interested.

It could have been an artifact of high mag and imperfect conditions, but my impression was as follows: A sea of blackness busily interwoven with twisting expanses of nebulosity, with bright stars rising out of and highlighting the glow. Very, very beautiful.
If I had the time, I'd draw it, but all my variables await, and we can't do it all....

Alan Plummer
