Twins in the Twilight

This is another image from the night of my Fireball Light shot.

I was cramped in a small truck at 4200m and struggling to sleep, so decided to get up and image the volcanoes in the first rays of morning twilight. I normally don't shoot vertical images (or didn't then), but by chance flipped the camera round and found the central Milky Way at the top nicely countering the volcanoes below. 100% unplanned. And making a guest appearance at left - the beautiful planet Venus.

ps. the colours are a little off on this one...sorry.

:bowdown: Hail to the king of night scapes! Another gorgeous image Colin. I personally don't think the colours are off at all. I know how hard it can be to get the exposure and processing just right with shots taken at this time of the morning with the pre dawn light just starting to take over. Can't wait to see what else you have to show us.......

Greg B - No kidnappings that trip. It is a real threat though with the Bolivian border only a few kilometres away. The most common crime is stealing your vehicle, racing back across the border and leaving you beside the road. I had to check in with the local cops to let them know I was there just in case it happened to me. :help:

My only brush with criminals so far has been the robbing of my truck in an underground department store carpark in Calama. They smashed the window and stole $5K worth of camera gear + 2 months of Chilean/NZ imagery. Very depressing! :sadeyes:

Say, I have actually been up that way in 1994. 16,000 ft el, yes? Now there is a monster radio telescope array going in somewhere in that area.

Hard lessons learned about the theft of camera gear. I could not leave anything in our car here in San Jose California. It would be gone in no time. Crime not specific to anywhere these days.

For the eclipse? I was there too :). Not in Chile, but on the other side of the volcanoes in Bolivia. I remember passing them the previous day, thinking how amazing it would be to see the eclipse rising over them (from Chile).

Yes, hard lesson learned re. the robbing. Only left the truck for 15 minutes to get a snack. I had my backpack with me with another disk and camera so all was not lost. To rub further salt in the wound my insurance mob refused to pay out because the loot wasn't in a boot. The truck didn't have one.

Amazing image Colin. I guess theft of such an amount of gear and not getting any insurance would have hurt a lot. Love your work.

This is unbelievable the extent insurance companies will go to get out of paying. I guess it's all in the fine prints. My uncle got flooded 20yrs ago. Unfortunately the wall of water came through the windows not the roof, so again no cover. Of course all in the fine prints as well.

Very nice image, Colin! The framing works so well and even slightly more yellow Milky Way looks great offsetting the peaks.
