Fireball Light

This is from the archives, but I just came across it today and thought you guys may be interested.

Taken about a year and half ago on my last trip to Chile, it's from the northern Lauca region with twin volcanoes Parinacota and Pomerape. The frame is from late in a timelapse just before the lens fogged over. I think the temp was around -15C and the handwarmers on the lens had given up the ghost.

In all the time I've been timelapsing (3 years) this is the only shot I have where a fireball has lit up the sky. The head is behind the hills, but it's tail is just visible and you can see the head light reflected on the slopes of the volcano to the left (Pomerape).

That is a stunning image. Such an asethetic landscape all by itself and the fireball is the icing on the cake.

:eyepop:Wow! Another awesome capture even without that amazing fireball Colin :thumbsup: I have never seen one that bright at night but I was lucky enough to see a daytime fireball as a kid.

It sure was a nice surprise to see that frame after the disappointment of loosing the last 1/3 of the timelapse to lens fog. Amazing location up there, but a pretty hard hike to get to that spot (4200m I think).

Mike, absolutely the dream location for a nightscaper. I'd love to go to Bolivia as well, but can't convince any of my work colleagues in the Chilean office to come with me. They all say it's too dangerous and my Spanish isn't good enough to go alone.

Greg, I was fast asleep in the truck when it happened so missed it. The colour reminds me of the green fireballs I saw during the 2001 Leonids from Kalbari. I still rate that 1/2 hour show as the most spectacular thing I've ever seen.
