Hi folks,

I'm heading o/s shortly and was looking at getting a wideangle lens for my Canon. Wanted to use it for some astro photos (since I won't be carrying all my scope gear with me) and also for general touristy stuff.

Any thoughts on what I should be looking at, etc.? I have heard Tokina make some good lenses. Would be looking at keeping the price under $1000.

Thanks,
Af.

Tokina 11-16 would've been my next choice if I was still on a crop sensor.

The Canon 10-22 is also a great choice but is getting a little slow for astrophotos at f/3.5.

Samyang 14mm F2.8 is popular and is getting good results. On a crop camera thought that is 22mm.

The Canon 10-22mm is excellent.

Thanks for the info guys. I've just been reading that the Tokina 11-16 has quite severe chromatic aberration. If this just something I need to deal with in this price range?

Hi Afro Boy,
I bought a Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6 wide angle lens on special from Teds Camera House in April for $750.00, for my Canon 550D, and have been happy with it. It will never be as good as a Canon lens I don't suppose (I have never compared them side by side), but then I couldn't afford to spend the $1000 plus needed for a Canon lens, and wouldn't be able to justify such cost anyway. I'm happy and am using the camera set up on a camera tripod and a Vixen Polarie clock drive. Still practising!

Thanks Jason. Interestingly, the CA on the Canon (in the corner shot) is more noticeable to my eyes.

I have a friend with a Tokina so will give it a shot over the next week before making a purchase. I'm leaning towards that lens at the moment.

Cheers,
Af.
