On the 4th of July 2007 I went in for life saving surgery. Today I celebrate 5 years clear of bowel cancer. :D
It's been a long road travelled since then, with a few more ops to contend with. But here I am now, feeling the best I've been in ages. :D
I have nothing but praise for our public health system. They have looked after me so well.

Once again I'd like to thank everyone on the forum for your support during that time. I don't think I could have made it without all your positive thoughts and well wishes.

The message I'd like to put out to you all is the fact that Bowel Cancer is highly curable if it's caught early.
If you feel that anything is happening out of the ordinary "down there", please please please go to your GP for a check up. There is no time to put it off. Don't give this insidious disease a chance to take hold.
Here is a list of possible symptoms from Bowel Cancer Australia.

Congratulations jjj, and welcome to the survivors club.
I'm going on 10 years since my first diagnosis, NHL in my case, and yes, if anyone thinks anything is odd down there, up here or anywhere else, get it checked out. The public health system really looked after me also.

I too am only here because I got in very early, and I am extremely grateful to see my girl growing up, I started treatment back on her first birthday and didn't think I'd see her second. I was glad to be wrong on that score!

Great GREAT love these stories. And I agree too many are too quick to rubbish our public health system I am just starting my diagnosis and treatment for a Muscle Disease and spinal problems and I couldn't be happier with the care I am getting

Great to hear. Well done to you both!

Mum had part of her bowel removed last year, caught early thanks to her GP who sent her off to have her tested after a visit on something totally unrelated.

Mum and Dad are currently driving around the United States in an RV.....not bad for a couple of 70 year olds

Hi jjj

Colon cancer is not to be ignored but there is hope. My grandmother died from the after effects of colon cancer (at 92) and my mum died year before last from the same, most disapointing she was only 14 months from the big 100

Glad to hear your doing okay JJJ and Poita.

I have a chronic bowel disease (ulcerative colitis). While not cancerous, it has higher risk so have to keep an eye on it.

Excellent news JJJ and Peter!

This thread is also a timely reminder to us all.

As we all pass through life, we hear these reminders in conversations
from others who have had cancer or known someone who has had cancer -

Health wise, if one suspects something or if a family member, work colleague or
friend suggests "you ought to get that checked", then do it now. Not next month,
not next year, not when you "aren't so busy".

It might simply be something subtle, like the water-works playing up a little.

The state of the art is such that if a cancer is specific, then there is often a specific
targeted treatment and the prognosis is more likely to be good.

Ignore it, give it time to spread and let it become non-specific and the arsenal of
targeted therapies may no longer be an option and the chance of a good prognosis
diminishes.

A colleague who specializes in the diagnosis of leukemia once told me if
it ever gets to the point where one needs to go under the knife, the last words to
your surgeon before they put you under should be, "Get all of it".

just an extra thing nettie, my wife and i were married in 1989 since going out together since we were 15 and 16 years old and when we (finally) got married my father in law had just been diagnosed with bowel cancer only the day before our wedding!
the poor ******* looked like "death warmed up" but he didnt let on for fear of spoiling the day god bless him!
he is me best mate and and we get along famously
he has just been "probed" last friday and not a pollip in sight still....doesnt need to be seen for five years
he smokes like a chimney, and has done since he was six years old without a break (stubborn big dubliner) and to top it all off has had a five way heart bypass!!! and at 73 my beautiful wife calls him "dr who" for his amazing regenerative powers.

I hope you're travelling ok Pete.
It changes you eh. And not just the physical changes that have been forced upon us.
The door has been opened, and you've looked your own mortality square in the eye. You can't go back again.
And as much as others would like to try to understand, they can't.

It is a long road, but gets easier with time.

Poita

It is odd isn't it, I actually found the post treatment period when I was 'better' harder going than the chemo and radio treatment itself ( I know that sounds nuts).

This thread prompted me to go in for a skin check yesterday too, that I had been putting off. They found three pre-cancerous sites and removed them, so I am glad I went!

Hope you are traveling the journey okay, the road can feel long, but it is good news when it is a long journey! :D

:( what a horrible time that was for you Petra. I hope time is easing your pain. xo

And the biggest message of all is to follow your Doctors orders. They are the ones who's knowledge is based on decades of research and experience. Don't listen to the promises that the quacks and snake oil merchants tell you. Homoeopathy and natural remedies have no place in the fight against cancer. The truth is that it's a long hard road to recovery, there is no easy way to do it. If I had my way any unqualified person who says they can cure cancer should be made accountable for their actions with harsh penalties in place if the person they are treating dies.
