NGC3372 (Carina Neb) Tight crop

Between bad weather and the bright moon this was my first attempt at a subsection of NGC3372. Nothing quite went right. This was my first image with an autoguider and I forgot the remote for my camera at home so I was limited to 30second subs anyway. Then by the time I got everything working I only managed to get 27min worth of exposure before it disappeared behind a tree.

All in all I'm happy with the results. Came out a bit too red, but I'm sure I'll revisit this nebula many more times.

Chris, I have imaged many times this subsection with similar ampliation and I never saw the structure signalized by arrow. It is absolute new for me. Congratulations for it.

And I did not find an image similar on internet. Is there something new in Eta Carina region?
I am curious, and I will check it. Thank you for share it !

did you used filter ? H alpha for example ?

I looked at some similar Hubble images of the region and this object does show up so it is not a processing artefact but it is indeed a real object. Perhaps it looks new because you have not noticed it before.

Erm... this is embarrassing, but I am about 90% certain that it is something in my optics.

Earlier that night I saw something faint while looking at Acrux through a new eyepiece while getting my alignment started. At the time I didn't think too much of it and didn't actually notice it till I finished processing yesterday. No filter was used here which is why I'm perplexed as to why the image came out quite as red as it did. Maybe the Nikon D800 has more sensitivity in the deep reds than some other DSLRs which seem to produce a more purplish nebula.

I did have on my to do list to take some test images on Thursday of a few really bright objects and narrow down if the dot was my optics, and if so which part of the optics.

Failing that maybe I just found my first UFO :ship2:

As for the bright ring, looking at these (http://www.pbase.com/strongmanmike2002/image/142186131/original)I think it is an artifact :)

I searched for hundreds Nasa and ESO photos of keyhole nebula, and I did not find any similar.

"Failing that maybe I just found my first UFO" or it is happenning something there, now. It worth to check. Why not ? The majority of images was obtained one decade ago. The ring is very strong to be not percepted easely.

Despite of all, the image is very good, Chris. Again, congratulations.
