Hi all. First time imager. Got to start some where right? Just downloaded DSS and after having taken a few 60 sec pics (just pointed the cam. straight up) this morning, loaded them in and went through all the steps. All seemed to go well enough tho i'll have to sort the processing out. Not too sure about the rgb adjustment especially since it takes so long for the result to show (Is that normal?) So was wondering if you can just save the unworked image and do all processing in ps. If so how can i open it if it doesn't like 32bit images. I take it there will be a way to save in 16 or 8 bit but wouldn't that defeat the purpose of having 32 bit in the first place?

Hey, firstly it is normal for changes to take place slowly when you alter something in DSS in your stacked image.

I didn't know PS had problems with 32bit floating pt files, but I have only been using 16bit light frames anyway.

It might help some of the more knowledgable guys if you tell us what time of camera you are using and also what version of Photoshop you have. I'm sure some of the gurus will be able to sort you out.

From the DSS site though, I noticed an entry saying if your graphics program doesn't support 32bit floating point images you will need to use one that does eg. pixinsight unless you want to save it down to 16 or 8bit.

Good luck!

Ok - DSS saves a file as a 32 bit but if you go to PS, you can go to IMAGE/MODE and drop it to 16 bit to work on it.
Don't boher doing any adjustments in DSS - they're not really that clever.

Some versions of photoshop will open a 32bit image, others will not.

If yours does open the 32bit TIF you can do as Jennifer has said.

If your version of PS does not open 32bit TIF, save the image in DSS as a 16bit TIFF ("Save picture to file.." link in DSS, choose 16bit TIFF in the save dialog) and open that in PS instead. You are unlikely to lose any data of significance saving it as 16bit.

I dare say if you have a version of PS which will not open the 32bit TIF, such as v5, you will end up needing to convert the 16bit image to 8bits inside photoshop to be able to do any significant editing, as those versions of photosohp don't allow much editing of 16bit images.
