Excellent meteor over Melbourne!

Tonight was my second night (first full night) of putting my scope through its paces and I'd been spending some time on Saturn.

Away from the scope (and my camera) I saw quite a large orange meteor with decent tail and bits flying off it. Seriously impressive. It was a little below Saturn at around 9:30pm (I didn't check my watch!).

I hope someone out there had a camera rolling as it looked pretty cool!

Sounds like a stray June Bootids possibly, not expected to be a good show this year but they are known for being slow travelling meteors which may explain the breaking up that was seen.

Yes I saw that! Actually, I'm amazed at how many meteors you can see from melbourne. Every clear night I go out with the scopes, guaranteed to see atleast one shooting star.

By far the best was the first time I showed my friend how to use her dob, as soon as we set up to look at Carina there was a very bright shooting star. Should have seen her smile :hi:
