Bright object in Melbourne skys

A friend of mine has just observed this :eyepop: looking North-West from Melbourne Dockands. I lasted about 5 minutes, was very bright and started from a dot. He has video of it too and thinks a lot of people must have seen it.

Did any one see it and any hints on what it was?

A west bound jet with it's contrails lit by the sun.

That's just what I suggested to my friend... the only thing that seemed odd to me after looking at several images was that the brightest point in most of the images doesn't move in relation to the power lines but I suppose if its moving away from him it wouldn't.

That's what I told him, he said it was definitely not a cloud, thought clouds (including entrails etc) can look pretty freaky sometimes :)

Yep, westbound jet indeed. Most probably Air NZ flight 175 Auckland-Perth.

I saw that also, and from almost the same spot, westbound on City Link headed for the West Gate Bridge. I thought 'contrail' also, but the shape was odd and it was freaky bright....

It's only distorted because of high level winds and was "freaky bright" as it is backlit by the sun.
