Jupiter April 12

Hi guys
Raced outside on Wednesday night around 11-30 to grab a quick avi of jupiter coz seeing looked better than it has been for a while.
Took this with the 8" Skywatcher newt using the NexImage in the 2.5x Powermate.
Just a quick and dirty run in Registax. No other processing.
Might run through the avi and hand pick 100-200 best frames and do an AstraImage and PS later.

Happy we caught a cuppla moons this time. What a difference slightly better seeing makes.

Any suggestions/ advice most welcome

Thanks Dan. Had the 9.25 set up ready to go last night, funny enough. But cloud conspired against me! At least the new Kendrick dew controller and heater strap arrived, along with the Lymax Cat cooler. So hoping for better things from the 9.25. That Lumicon 80A is great for visual on Joops, by the way.

Mate..... the dew has been horrific lately. I got the 9.25 in december so I'm only discovering the scale of the prob as we head into the cooler months. It's not pretty, is it. I couldn't believe it last night. Even the plastic handles of my screwdrivers were soaking wet!!! Dew on boxes, eyepiece caps ... everywhere. Even on a blanket covering my eyepiece table.

Yep been there :P unfortunately when i got my scope the second night i used it the correcter plate got a good soaking which has left a faint smudge thats exposed under the right lighting.Now ive got the full armament :D

Cheers DP. It was a good night. Was coming home from watching a live Pete Murray gig and noticed how nice and clear the seeing and transparency was. Literally threw the scope outside. No polar align, no tracking, no cooling. Dust all over the CCD. Was out for half an hour imaging. Then off to bed just after midnight. Alarm goes off at 3am for work. Knackered all day but happy I didn't miss it.

Did a quick cull with virtual dub and a bit of fine tuning through AstraImage.

Increased image scale has made it a little grainy but it's not bad, I think.

Thanks Asi. I am quite happy with how the 8" f5 performs. Seems less impacted by thermals, dew etc than the SCT. A little less complicated, although will not be able to compete when i get the 9.25 working at full gallop

Yeah, the C9.25 will blow it away for sure..No disrespect to the 8" of course, does a fine job for what it is.

Matt, that's a beautiful striking Joop, well done.:thumbsup: It is good not to have to fuss with dew and colling as much which is why I think I'll always keep my 7in Mewlon as well as the C9.25. Some nights you just don't want t bother with all the anti-dew stuff and would like a cool-down less than a couple of hours ;)

Am still waiting on really good seeing conditions but as you can see this is a marked improvement from previous posts of the Gassy One.

I see Bird was out imaging the same night and also confirms conditions here in Canberra were better than they've been for a while, but still a long way off what other folks have been fortunate enough to get.

The image suffered a bit from being made larger. What's the general consensus: Resample at the optimise stage in registax or wait right until after wavelets when you get to Final, and then resize???

Your help much appreciated. Any other comments on how I can improve would be very greatly appreciated.

PS ... I'll be adding a fan to the 8" newt shortly, and when I'm feeling really adventurous will go down the Bird/DP path and try more aggressive cooling like peltiers.

i would go resample via mitchell if the seeing allows it, but please be careful.

this is an awesome image by chris go, (http://www.christone.net/astro/jupiter/jupiter04120618-22c.jpg) but on my laptop, it would have been better not to have resampled 1.5x. Try reducing this in say photoshop by 75% and see how the detail is so much better on a laptop.

Mind you on the CRT, the 1.5x resample is awesome!
