View Full Version here: : East coast low for transit???

the likelyhood of an eastcoast low for the tranist is looking more and more the case. One thing i have noticed on the 4 day forecast MSSP chart is that the High in the bight is intensifying to 1041hp:eyepop: and the low centred over NSW and it cousin forming off the coast of qld are 1002 and 1004 respectivly:help: . thats quite a difference!
Basically if I understand this right no one from tasmania through to way up past Brisbane will have a good view. That is the BOM view of things, though accuweather has Brissy being clear and sunny and Coffs Harbour being partly cloudy, Newcastle and Sydney is written off and as far out as Coona is shrouded in cloud - i am watching the predictions for Coffs and Brissy intently. :confused2:
Coffs i can drive and take most gear, brissy is travelling light:question:
Why couldnt this have happened a week or two ago:shrug:

Yeh doesn't look good :(
Looks to be very windy too, especially with that difference in pressure between the L and H.

the only spot that looks like it will be ok is Adelaide - and that costs an arm and a few legs to get there from here, brisbane is only a finger ;)
The BOM Forecast Explorer is showing the likelihood of rain to be significantly
high along the coast of NSW but less that 10% in the west of the state.
See images below.
The satellite images of cloud over will be the ones to watch in the coming days.

yep that ruddy cloud will be the killer
The Forecast Explorer (http://www.bom.gov.au/weather-services/about/forecasts/about-graphical-forecasts.shtml), which is part of the Bureau's "Next Generation Forecast and
Warning System" has tipped "Mostly sunny" for Bourke and Tibooburra and
"Partly Cloudy" for Cobar and Broken Hill.
The Explorer goes down to a 6km grid scale.

i was thinking of heading west if it doesn't look good tuesday morning, you maybe right david about coffs harbour but i like to be out near tamworth away from the coastal cloud.then head out from there if it is still cloudy :shrug: what are your thoughts on that!!!!!!!!

It's going to be fine and partly cloudy for Kilcoy. Yer welcome to head out my way. Probably further west would be better though. Gotta keep away from the coast.

You guys scared me the east coast is in QUEENSLAND TOO so be more specific:P I am watching the weather closely but I was alarmed by the title. That being said I hope it is fine for all IIS members around the country.:prey:

Fingers crossed. Missed out on both total lunar eclipses last year due to cloud.
We are going to monitor the satellite coverage closely the day before and are
then considering a road trip heading off on the Tuesday afternoon depending on how
things pan out.
Back in Cook's day of pursuing the transit, the crew were greeted by topless Tahitian maidens.
All we are asking for is a break in the clouds.

Looking good for where I will be on Wednesday 15c, light winds and SUNNY :) Perfect Weather for a Transit.. I will probably be near Burra in SA. Only because I can get a reasonably clear area of sky with power :)

In the lead-up to the Venus transit I have read elsewhere that observing the Venus transit is much more dangerous to the eyes than observing an eclipse because of the much larger proportion of the sun showing, and that some 'eclipse glasses' may not be safe. With this in mind, can someone reassure me that the special eclipse glasses I bought recently from IceInSpace are still safe for the Venus transit event?
Cheers,
Geoff

I am sure they are safe to use with or without the moon in the way, they are intended for naked eye solar viewing. Remember a solar eclipse starts when the sun is full. My solar glasses from the solar eclipse in Ceduna still work perfectly fine, all black with an orange sun.

Hi Geoff
They're completely safe to use to view the Sun at any time - with or without a venus transit or eclipse.
They meet the required Australian standards.

I live in Wollongong but am travelling to either Tellegherry forest or mount Kaputar via Newcastle (camping gear is in Newcastle). Would the extra hours on the road for Mount Kaputar make a difference to my chances of having clear skies for the Venus transit or night sky?
Got my first telescope Thursday but haven't been able to use it once. Stupid air-water pollution!
According to the latest BOM prediction, there is a 40% chance of rain at
Mount Kaputar and the weather at Narrabri is described as a "possible early shower".
By comparison, at Coonamble, the current forecast is for a 5% chance of rain.
So it might be better to track west from Coonabarabran rather than go up
to Kaputar.
But check cloud coverage on the satellite before departing.

Here's the Skippysky transparency Map as of today...
It might give some clues on where to be. Hmmm, I might take the GS for a spin down to Lake Burrenjuck... no images but I'll get to see it and have a ride on twisty roads I haven't been on before...
:)
Al.
PS. The bylong Valley Way between Bylong and Sandy Hollow might be an option for gambling type Novocastrians... if the eye of the needle is still there on Wednesday!:P
I might just be in luck for Wednesday......they are saying 5% chance of rain.....good sunny breaks and 26 degs ...fingers x'd. we have just move up here and had to get scope from storage, gunna give it a set up today......we are in a rental so cant set scope up big time, so hope just to do some viewing and a few snap shots....lady said I can set it up in the resorts garden. :prey::bowdown:
