I have used a bit myself but there is enough to make a small filter for the apertures in your cover.

The fellow there reckoned I was lucky then and he wouldn't be receiving any more until July.

I post this on the understanding that the IIS eclipse glasses are now sold out and won't be restocked before the eclipse...

I was at Scienceworks in Melbourne on the weekend, and pottering around the shop, found that they have eclipse glasses IN STOCK (perhaps 40 or so pairs, that I could see?) for $2 a pair (a little less with members discount). For a last ditch option, it might be a go-er.

;) I feel for you Jen , I am a lot like you left it a bit late for the last transit in 2006 , but hey what this june 6th transit is doing , is a lot for amateur astronomy and it is great , and this has to be good :thumbsup: .
There is a little good news tho Jen , how about the good old fashioned ' solar projection' method ?
that way lots of people can view the transit ( and eclipse, later in the year ) at the same time using your beautiful scope .

I've just rung and spoke with Pete from Astro Pete's and he's put aside some eclipse glasses for me to pick up. :D
I happened to mention to him that I only heard of his shop because of this thread running and then he said "aaaaah that explains why I've been busy taking orders all morning" :lol: and then we both laughed. :lol:

As of 10.30am this morning when I spoke with him, he still had plenty of eclipse glasses in stock with another 2 cartons being delivered soon. :thumbsup:


He's open Friday and Saturday nights till 9pm, be he said they're often there till mid-night.

I've just had a look at the price of his Baader astro film and it's only $33!!!
Andrews Comms. & Sirius Optics had them at $49 which is what I paid, that's such a great price. ♮

I think they've hit on a fabulous business plan there having it double as a cafe and not relying on the sale of only astro supplies which seems to be the case of demise of so many astro shops.

Btw if you're looking for a green laser pointer... I bought a 10 mW green laser pointer for $19 AUD (excl. shipping) from Peter Tan in Hong Kong. It's very bright, even in my suburban back yard. (There's also a metal bracket with a remote trigger cable for attaching to a scope.)

If you cannot get solar film build a solar funnel for your scope. Projection system. Google is your friend.

Err whoops... I didn't realised there were import restrictions until I just did some quick research :question: I would have been quite happy to do the paperwork had I known about it!

I bought mine from overseas because the Tak accessories I'd ordered were much cheaper, and noticed that it was much cheaper than the $100+ options available locally.

Thanks to Tom and Malcolm for their amazing generosity i can now set up my dobbie to have a go at taking some pics and i can do some viewing with my 6" newt yayyyyyyyy oh and thank you to all that have offered me the eclipse glasses if i took up all the offers i would of had a whole box full right now :lol: (Dam i could have made some money here hahahahaha)

The reason for the eclipse glasses was the only way i could get the day off work to view this event :lol: I could have the day off if i supplied the glasses to the poor staff that have to look after the office for me while im busy like a kid in a candy store out at the Lake Boga Observatory for the day wohooooooooooooooo yay cant wait :D:D:D

Damn, somewhat unexpectedly bought my first scope (114mm newt) yesterday with the hope of using it to view the venus transit. Sucks that I can't find any baader film, will try to build some sort of projection system.

Atleast I have my first scope, will be going camping from 3rd till the 7th, so plenty of time to test this baby out :)

Looks like the Baader solar continuum filters for photography are popular too. The country seems to be sold out of them completely now! (I think I bought the last one). After thinking I had one lined up after ordering it through a place here in Adelaide they told me only yesterday they couldn't get one. After calling every continuum filter retailer known to man in Australia I managed to get the last one direct from the wholesaler! Albeit a 2in instead of a 1 1/4in but I can at least modify it to fit if needed.

This thread has proven a very useful resource over the last few days as we have
been receiving a steady stream of telephone calls from people inquiring as to
whether we stock solar filter. As this is something we don't stock, I have
at least been able to read-out the URL's of possible stockists to the callers.

There are a significant group of people in Australia who own telescopes but
have never heard of IceInSpace, that do not belong to an astronomy club but are
technically savvy enough to know what Baadar AstroSolar film is.

We are still getting calls on Tuesday afternoon as to whether we have filters.

Some have certainly left it to the last minute.

For Sydney-based callers I have been reminding them that their single biggest problem for tomorrow is the forecast for the
weather which does not look promising.

Chances are one will need to drive to somewhere like Griffith for the best bet to have sunny skies.
