Jen
I have some Baader Solar Film that you can have if you want to have a go at making one.
PM me with your address and I will post it to you
I have used a bit myself but there is enough to make a small filter for the apertures in your cover.
Malcolm
I got the last 12" SCT solar filter from Astro-Optical about a month ago.
The fellow there reckoned I was lucky then and he wouldn't be receiving any more until July.

Hi Jen,
I have an off axis solar filter for the 12" Dobsonian (like this: http://s7d5.scene7.com/is/image/Orion/340x340_template?$340x340$&$prod=is%7BOrion//07725?scl-=%7D ) that I won't be using. I can send it to you if you like.
Cheers,
Tom

I post this on the understanding that the IIS eclipse glasses are now sold out and won't be restocked before the eclipse...
I was at Scienceworks in Melbourne on the weekend, and pottering around the shop, found that they have eclipse glasses IN STOCK (perhaps 40 or so pairs, that I could see?) for $2 a pair (a little less with members discount). For a last ditch option, it might be a go-er.
Hope this helps :)

;) I feel for you Jen , I am a lot like you left it a bit late for the last transit in 2006 , but hey what this june 6th transit is doing , is a lot for amateur astronomy and it is great , and this has to be good  .
There is a little good news tho Jen , how about the good old fashioned ' solar projection' method ?
that way lots of people can view the transit ( and eclipse, later in the year ) at the same time using your beautiful scope .
Brian.

Same here Jen- I too was disappointed when I went to buy the IIS eclipse glasses and found there were none left.
I'm so glad you're able to get a filter sorted out (hopefully) with Tom's generous offer.
Liz, I can't thank you enough for supplying the Astro Pete's link above- hah! who knew there was an astro shop just 10 mins away from me. :eyepop: Yippeeeeee!
I've just rung and spoke with Pete from Astro Pete's and he's put aside some eclipse glasses for me to pick up. :D
I happened to mention to him that I only heard of his shop because of this thread running and then he said "aaaaah that explains why I've been busy taking orders all morning" and then we both laughed.
As of 10.30am this morning when I spoke with him, he still had plenty of eclipse glasses in stock with another 2 cartons being delivered soon.
He's open Friday and Saturday nights till 9pm, be he said they're often there till mid-night.
EDIT
I've just had a look at the price of his Baader astro film and it's only $33!!!
Andrews Comms. & Sirius Optics had them at $49 which is what I paid, that's such a great price. ♮
Ha, great to hear Suzy!! I hadnt heard of his shop until last week, and ordered a few goodies (Tring.camera adapter and some eclipse sunnies, and a camera mount for the top of the scope to attach my DSLR!!) which arrived today. :D
there is a green laser finderscope there that is sending me subliminal vibes ........ :help:

Can you use Un-exposed X-Ray film ?
 Liz, if you're talking about the green laser pointer (?), it was sending me the same message ..."buy me.. buy me..". I said to it, sorry I can't Mr Green Thing, I have to buy a new eyepiece.:D Going the ES 4.7mm 82 deg ep Liz- thought I'd give it a go- you seem pretty happy with its performance and we've both got 10" dobs we use it on.
I actually said to him he should advertise more and he chuckled and said they do plenty of advertising. Then I said but he's name never pops up across the forum, only Sirius Optics.
And errr Ron from Sirius if you're reading this, don't worry I will still support your business too  I think that even if we pay just a bit more money for our purchases, it's important to keep our local astro shops in business. ;)
I think they've hit on a fabulous business plan there having it double as a cafe and not relying on the sale of only astro supplies which seems to be the case of demise of so many astro shops.
Stu,
I don't know if any of the info below will help with your question but I'll post anyway..
Perhaps ask that same question in the Venus Transit thread (in Celestial Events Forum)?
I've seen people asking solar safety questions in there and being answered well.
http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/2012/05/23/3508538.htm
A nice little website too. Also like that they have telescope viewing of Friday and Saturday night outside - if you are looking at a scope, its a good opportunity.
Yep, that green Mr Thingy is the one ... stop it now!! :poke:
Good luck with the new EP Suzy, been such awhile since I used it, but liked the view it gave.

Thanks for the link about Astro Pete's... such a great idea!
Btw if you're looking for a green laser pointer... I bought a 10 mW green laser pointer for $19 AUD (excl. shipping) from Peter Tan in Hong Kong. It's very bright, even in my suburban back yard. (There's also a metal bracket with a remote trigger cable for attaching to a scope.)
http://tan14.com/Others.htm
You got it through Customs OK? I have a green laser now, but also one at Brisbane Customs. :help: I do like the idea of attaching to the scope though. :)

If you cannot get solar film build a solar funnel for your scope. Projection system. Google is your friend.

Err whoops... I didn't realised there were import restrictions until I just did some quick research  I would have been quite happy to do the paperwork had I known about it!
I bought mine from overseas because the Tak accessories I'd ordered were much cheaper, and noticed that it was much cheaper than the $100+ options available locally.
:eyepop::eyepop: WOW guys you are all amazing you know that  IIS peeps always looking out for each other at these desperate times (HUGS)
I rang bintel today and they do still have some baader film and glasses if anyone is like me that is not organised yet
I am always one for doing things at the last minute  you should all have taught me a lesson and laughed at me instead and saying hahahah Jen we will tell you all about it when the transit is over
Thanks to Tom and Malcolm for their amazing generosity i can now set up my dobbie to have a go at taking some pics and i can do some viewing with my 6" newt yayyyyyyyy oh and thank you to all that have offered me the eclipse glasses if i took up all the offers i would of had a whole box full right now  (Dam i could have made some money here hahahahaha)
The reason for the eclipse glasses was the only way i could get the day off work to view this event  I could have the day off if i supplied the glasses to the poor staff that have to look after the office for me while im busy like a kid in a candy store out at the Lake Boga Observatory for the day wohooooooooooooooo yay cant wait :D:D:D
THANKS AGAIN GUYS ((((HUGS))))

Damn, somewhat unexpectedly bought my first scope (114mm newt) yesterday with the hope of using it to view the venus transit. Sucks that I can't find any baader film, will try to build some sort of projection system.
Atleast I have my first scope, will be going camping from 3rd till the 7th, so plenty of time to test this baby out :)

Would prefer pickup, and astropetes is a bit too far from sydney/newcastle.
Calling a bunch of shops in sydney to see if any has in stock.
Good luck Hans, Sydney is a big place, and must be a few Astroshops around??

Looks like the Baader solar continuum filters for photography are popular too. The country seems to be sold out of them completely now! (I think I bought the last one). After thinking I had one lined up after ordering it through a place here in Adelaide they told me only yesterday they couldn't get one. After calling every continuum filter retailer known to man in Australia I managed to get the last one direct from the wholesaler! Albeit a 2in instead of a 1 1/4in but I can at least modify it to fit if needed.
:thanks::thanks::thanks:
Thanks Malcolm and Tom my filters etc arrived all in fantastic timing :D
The skies are beautiful and clear today so its time for me to do some practice runs :sunny:
Peeps here on IIS are just amazing i hope one day i can return the favour muahhhhhhhhhhh :)
Thanks again :D

This thread has proven a very useful resource over the last few days as we have
been receiving a steady stream of telephone calls from people inquiring as to
whether we stock solar filter. As this is something we don't stock, I have
at least been able to read-out the URL's of possible stockists to the callers.
There are a significant group of people in Australia who own telescopes but
have never heard of IceInSpace, that do not belong to an astronomy club but are
technically savvy enough to know what Baadar AstroSolar film is.
On behalf of all those who have thanked me on the phone, let me pass on
thanks to those who posted the links to suppliers that might still have stock.
Best Regards

ditto Gary!
I wish I'd ordered another 2000 glasses - I could've easily filled the demand over the past few weeks. It's been incredible.
Speaking with Astrovisuals, I know he's had similar demand for stock!
Lesson learned for the eclipse later this year!
Hi Mike,
Mai and I have been commenting over the past few days how you must have been
flat out on your feet shipping solar glasses.
On the 8th of May you posted you had 1200 in stock you were trying to move -
http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showpost.php?p=849644&postcount=1
and yet by the 28th Jen posted on this thread that you had run out!
We were speculating as to whether any of the private schools had swooped a lot
up from you or were they mainly individual sales?
And to think you could easily have shipped 2000 more. :eyepop: Well done!
We are still getting calls on Tuesday afternoon as to whether we have filters.
Some have certainly left it to the last minute.
For Sydney-based callers I have been reminding them that their single biggest problem for tomorrow is the forecast for the
weather which does not look promising.
Chances are one will need to drive to somewhere like Griffith for the best bet to have sunny skies.
