Hi everyone, if you're interested in seeing where you fellow Iceinspacers live check out the Members Map here (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/plot/world.php) . You'll get a bit of a chuckle out of how many members we have living in the Himalaya and in China and in the middle of some of the worlds oceans.

Please check your Latitude and Longitude in your members area under your profile. You're latitude should read -26.7 or 27.7S . Don't enter -26 38" or similar. Same goes for Longitude 153 or 153E .

If you don't know your latitude and longitude then at the end of the Lat and Long boxes is a link to Heavens above (http://www.heavens-above.com/countries.asp) to help you work it out.

Good luck and lets get it up to date. If we get it so that we are all sitting on top of each other maybe we'll end up with a magnifiable map.....Hey Terry ;)

I found this great site for victorians:

http://services.land.vic.gov.au/maps/interactive.jsp

you can get the exact co-ords down to your house block! :)

The new members map is still ongoing, Terry just needs a poke :poke: every now and then. It'll be great when it's done.

There's talk of interfacing it to google earth, but there's other issues with that. Hopefully we'll have something by the time we get to 2000 members.

I have been removed! Interesting. Can I please be put back?

And as pointed out by myself and other members in conversation, there is no link to get to the map until someone posts a link in a post as above.

Is it possible to have a link placed in an obvious place so the map can be accessed whenever someone wants to access it, instead of waiting till someone places it in a post like Paul did above.

Thank you :)

hi ken, do you have your co-ord in your profile?

ballaratdragons

Check your profile Ken.
No co-ords, no place on the map. :D
According to your profile, additional information N/A.

I used to be on the map. Which means I was removed from the map. Simple logic:lol:

The map is generated automatically from the profile info (latitude & longitude) that the members enter. I know because I just put myself in the ocean by editing my profile. :D

But I better come back to land now before I drown...

You removed yourself from the map Ken! :)

The new map will be great, when it's done.

Thanks Vespine thats a great link!!!
Though it gives you your co-ords in degree-minutes. Do you know if i can convert them to decimal degrees?

Starkler
12-04-2006, 09:34 PM
Sixty minutes to a degree, so :

1 minute = 0.01666 degrees ( 1/60 )

I wonder if we eliminated all the members who have signed up but have never visited or posted since, would we have so many red dots?:P

Lost of people sign up, visit, but don't post. It doesn't mean they don't count.
Everyone is equal at IceInSpace. We don't discriminate between little red dots :)

If you look at the IP access to the site however, you will find that although they do not post, they are still frequent visitors,,about 5 to 10 % post,,mostly.. Management tell me if im wrong.. run a check over IP vs User name Vs last Log in,, suprising results...

Off topic I know but there you go,

All the best guys..

I wrote a googlemap extension for the Three Peaks Race last year. If you want to integrate members positions onto a GM map, I can be of assistance!

You can find the 3pr map here:

http://www.threepeaks.org.au/results/skeds/tracker.php

You'll find the map is hosted on prism9.com - that's my machine.

it'd be great if you were able to magnify it so you can see whos in your general area... that way if you needed hands-on help with something like polar alignment at your home site or help learning to process images etc. you could find someone near you who has the skills you want to learn, so you know who to ask..

I am curious as to why some IIS members appear to be living in the middle of the ocean :P.

Floating observatories? Most likely incorrect Long and Lat in their User CP.

BerrieK
09-03-2009, 09:53 AM
They are floating about in the Goodies offshore pirate radio station listening to A walk in the Black Forest.
In a thread not long ago related to an incident of break and enter / theft of scope it was suggested that your true coordinates are not listed along with your list of astro toys for security purposes...the Goodies are there for security...

AlexN
09-03-2009, 06:17 PM
Just dont be too exact with your coordinates.. Ie - coordinates of the center of the suburb you live in will do...

I love this idea. Would be great to learn about members who live closer to me (e.g. Mornington Peninsula), etc. Privacy of course would be an issue so people would have to be careful not to put their most specific location.

Cheers,
Af.

Is there anyway to get a Members map that zooms to separate out the dots a bit:question:

mojo
15-03-2011, 10:45 AM
Zooming the map is technically not too much of a problem. Having said that...

People can choose to advertise their rough coordinates to others. The coordinates that members provide are currently used to provide astronomical information and to calculate line-of-sight distance between two members.

The current member map does not broadcast the exact coordinates of any member to anyone. A map that displays coordinates of people becomes a privacy issue when the same coordinates are used to display their location on a zoomable map. Simply because their coordinates are open for all to see when using an interface that runs in a web browser.

I have written a couple of zoomable maps but they will never see the light of day in their current form. In the end, any public map will only display a limited number of members. ie. Only the people who have opted to be shown on a map. Which will make for a very boring map.

It's been a while since I've looked at that map. That's a lot o' dots!

I found the map. Not easy to find, not very well advertised on the forum????
How you get any detail from it?
Can you add your own position details??
