Hi all,

Well I am the proud owner of a new iPad. Having never ventured into App land, I know little of what is good and what is not. So I was wondering if you wouldn't mind saying what your favourite iPad Apps are.

Any category would be great, though first up I need a good star map program. There are so many on the store, do you have any recommendations and why one is better than another?

With thanks in advance.

Shane

Sky Safari is a beaut! I have several planetarium apps on my iPad and its the only one I still use.
Kindle is my most used app overall, always reading books on the iPad

Depends what you want to use your iPad for :)

Redshift
Exoplanet
ABC iView
Skype
OzTV
AroundMe
Facebook
RDP + TeamViewer + VNC Viewer
FileBrowser (great for browsing network drives)
Fing
Letter Opener ... for those annoying Outlook emails in non-standard format.

... the list keeps going :)

Thanks for the suggestions (and your ongoing advice Roger). I'm still looking into what I can use it for. There are so many Apps in the store. Sorry, that's why I posted in the general section as I was after general Apps though I do want a Star Chart App too of course.

My kids love it and I think it is a great learning instrument. I have to wait until they go to bed to get a look at it.

Have a great day.

I use mine for music production as a virtual synthesiser
Animoog, Filtatron, Korg iMS20, morphwiz, and samplewiz and garageband.
and use a midi interface for real hardware, the regular USB camera connector kit only delivers a small amount of power, but it works fine powering small USB MIDI devices like the LPK25 and LPD8.

There is also the yamaha interface:

and this one:

One of my kids has Autism, so we use heaps of communications and other apps to help her along.

The other stuff, for time-lapse and stop-motion photography, we use imotion-HD which is a fantastic app.

Kindle app for books as well as ibooks, Teleprompt+ for practicing speeches and presentations, uTalk Slovak for learning to speak to my new relatives since my brother got married, Autostitch for panorama photography, Filmic Pro and iMovie for video, Medscape for checking out medications and contra-indications, CricketLive for cricket scores, SkySafariPro for controlling the EQ6 wirelessly and demoncam for freaking out the kids.
AutoCad WS and Sketchbook for design, and logmein for controlling my PC and MAC remotely from the iPod.
They are the most used apps, along with a bunch of games.

Thanks Peter. Wow there are some great Apps there. I'll check them out. Have you seen the new Mackie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72Lz1jyeBHU) mixer that is controlled by iPad?

Yes it is very cool. I'm about to buy a Yamaha EMX 5016 and this made me think twice. Behringer (http://www.behringer.com/news/behringer-introduces-revolutionary-ipad-mixers-xenyx-ix3242usb-ix2442usb-and-ix1642usb/) do an iPad mixer too.

Here's one you didn't list Peter:
http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/rebirth-for-ipad/id401704148?mt=8

I used to play around with Rebirth on the PC more than a decade ago, it was great then, but clumsy using a mouse.....
It is now very aptly named as it has gone thru a Rebirth with the advent of touch-screen devices.

Oh, and the NLog synth is pretty cool too. http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/nlogsynth-pro/id393879841?mt=8
I only have the free version on the iPhone, but it's so much fun.

Here's my little studio. iOS is the only solution for me. I rely on two iPads and my iPhone 4 to add both synthesis and sequencing functionality to my sessions. iOS development for music applications is incredibly advanced.

Apps that I use for various scenarios, both live and in-studio (in co-op with Live8 and Logic9) are:

Synths: Alchemy, Animoog, Filtatron, Addictive Synth, Fairlight Pro, Korg iMS-20, NLog PRO, ThumbJam, iKaossilator, Sunrizer, Voice Synth, SynthStation, Aura Flux, Aurora, 76 Synthesizer, improVox, Cylon Voice, Seline Ultimate, Bebot, Morphwiz, CoreSynthHD, CrystalSynthXT, Xenon, Noise.io, iElectribe, JasutoPro, iVoxel, iSynPoly, Synth+, Aeolian Harp, GarageBand, SixStrings

MIDI/Sequencers: StepPolyArp, Phaedra, SoundPrism Pro, Loopy HD, LittleMidi, MidiMonitor, iSequence, genomeMIDI, Loopseque, expressionPad, Rhythm, PolyChord, ORBnote, iMaschine, KapturePad, GrooveMaker, Cascadr, MixTiki, SweetMIDI, AudioMIDI, MidiBridge

Drums/others: SampleTank, iDrum, Drums!, BassLine, MoDrum, ClockWork, Cleartune, DM1, NodeBeat HD, FunkBox

Touch surface apps: touchAble, Lemur, TouchOSC. Performer

Astronomy? Only one any more - SkySafari PRO

Quite some time ago I was thinking of getting a hardware control surface for my studio (to control Cubase). I ended up getting an iPad2 and AC7 Core, which worked quite well. I have since upgraded to Neyrinck V-Control Pro which is a very capable product and well worth looking at if you need a control surface for your studio.

If you like adventure games, Machinarium is unbeatable.

If you happen to be a sim racer, iHUD for rFactor is an excellent product and is rapidly developing into a must have.

Splashtop is a great app for remote controlling other PCs on your network from your iPad.

Sky Safari is the best astronomy app that I have found yet, and it interfaces directly with the SkyFi units allowing you to hook your iPad up to your telescope.

Is there a good vocoder app?

Holy crap! How did I miss iHUD? I have been waiting for something like that for ages.

I've never been much into card games, but a friend installed Magic 2013 on mine so he could have a go. I ended up having a game one day and found it really, really enjoyable - it's free to try out too.

Other than that, the obvious SkySafari Pro and NightSky come to mind!
