Satellite question

I noticed a "slow moving star" high in the west last night, thinking it must be a satellite I turned around to grab the scope but when I turned back it had disappeared. Is it usual for satellites to appear and disappear like that?

It all depends on how long the satellite is in the Sun's light as seen from your location. The satellites altitude and orbit are also factors.
