Congratulations to Sydney amateur Peter Williams who has discovered a nova in Ophiuchus. Peter noticed the possible new object on Thursday as he was variable star observing, and the IAU announced the confirmation of it as a nova yesterday.

I've done a write-up of the discovery below. The nova as of yesterday was 9th magnitude.

Ophiuchus is rising late in the evening at present.

If you're looking to see the nova, NZ amateur John Drummond has taken a pic of the field. I've updated the webpage with it.

Observers are still reporting it at about magnitude 9.5.

It is great to see a visual observer being rewarded for their labours. Just goes to show that sometimes the human eye is the best tool of all.;)

Well done Peter Williams, you legend!
