View Full Version here: : Big Full Moon on Sunday May 6.
We have a Full Moon coinciding with its perigee on Sunday resulting in the biggest and brightest Moon for the year. A couple of sites said that it will be biggest Moon since 1912!!
So check it out on Sunday evening, depending on what time Moonrise is in your area - around about 6.30pm. It should look huge as it rises above the horizon.

A couple of sites are talking nonsense :)
The moon on March 19 2011 was bigger... so....
The nice thing about this "supermoon" is that there's only a 2 minute difference between fullmoon and perigee, it's just in the middle of the night for Argentina so I believe it will be at daytime in Australia.
It's a nice thing I don't think there's such a coincidence between perigee and fullmoon in the next 100 years.
Pssst, don't let anyone fool you :P
The moon has been the same size for many millions of years, give or take a couple of rocks more or less
Just joking, i hope those clouds will part and give me the opportunity to photograph it

Thanks Liz, did a search and found that the Moon distance can vary by up to 43,592kms. All the best.

:help:Hi there, I'm new to this forum and was wondering if anyone could tell me when exactly the supermoon is going to be visible. On my iphone app it says the moon will be full on the 5th and the 6th and that the moon will appear larger on the 5th. I looked it up online and it said that perigee would happen close to midnight and at 11.45pm. However the moon looked just like it would any other full moon night. SoI wnt online again and found that it lookslarger at moonrise and moonset. Since I completely missed both rise and set yesterday, would I be able to catch it today?
So here are my questions..
1. My iphone app (star walk) says it's going to be a full moon tonight too ( I don't understand why the moon will full onthe 5th and the 6th)
2. If the supermoon was infact on the 5th, will it appear larger today? (the 6th...at moon rise)
Sorry if these are silly questions... I'm really new to all of this :P
Oh and I'm located in Melbourne.
It will be tonight again in about 15 minutes.
The biggest bummer is that it is clouded over and it looks like we get nothing to see in Melbourne :(

Actually, I was outside last night at 9pm and I thought the moon looked larger. Went and did a little research and saw in fact it was - had no idea the full moon was coinciding with perigee. Got to keep the eyes in training :)
