Purchasing online ex US can be a minefield especially when it comes to freight charges

I recently ordered several items in two separate orders one of which was put of back order when I asked to combine the two orders so as I would only be charged one freight charge I was told no problem but it would be several days before the back ordered item would be available

Ok I asked to change the back ordered item to a similar item which they had in stock but was advised the the replacement item was 6lb heavier so I'd be up for additional freight charges although the item was $10 cheaper than the original item I ordered they wanted another $26 for extra freight charges

Me being a miser checked both manufacturers websites and found that the 2 items weighed nearly the same about 2 ounces diff

So where did they come up with a $36 freight price difference (same shipping method)

I've gone back to them stating that all items total combined weight according to spec's would be under 4 lbs including packaging so how can they justify the additional charge

Has anyone had a similar issue ordering online with regard to freight charges

Hi Trevor, was there a difference in the size of the parcel? Maybe the alternative had larger packaging; just a thought.

Freight companies can charge a volumetric weight rather than actual weight and this can often be more than the actual weight. For instance, if you shipped a dew shield, the size is fairly large whilst it weighs practically nothing.

I get a lot of stuff from overseas and can't say I have ever been hit with what I would call excessive freight costs; and like you, I am a miser too and don't like to pay more than I have to, but that is because I have little cash usually! Yes, some items have cost a lot in freight but that has been because of its odd shape or its size.

But an extra $36 does sound excessive though.
