The prices offered by some australian dealers IMO are quite reasonable and in some cases less than the US prices when exchange rates are taken into account. At the end of the day Astro dealers have to make a living.

Barter. I am lucky that the guy I get my stuff from will match prices with anything I find on the net. He knocked $100 off my scope without even blinking. I know they have to make a living, but I think there is a fairly stiff markup in some places.

how much does it cost to mass produce a sports shoe in a sweatshop or build a car? :)

On some aastronomy products there is fierce competition. And many are cheaper here than in the US, e.g., most Synta and GS products, which is amazing. A handful of big companies seem to have monopoly in the US.

If you do your homework and shop around you can get very good deals in Oz.

helps to pit them against eachother a bit too... find the lowest price and see if somone can beat it :)
nothing wrong with healthy competition :)
