Travelling home for work yesterday I thought I'd set up the camera on the seat beside me and do a timelapse of the trip. It goes from Mooball, in NSW, to the Gateway Motorway turnoff in Brisbane and is sped up about 7x. Traffic was steady but not bad at all.

That felt like I was sitting in a time dilation experiment. ;)

A nice bit of countryside though, very lush and green.

I was expecting the TARDIS to appear infront of your car hehe.

At least you didn't have Yakkity Sax playing as the music, it was very nice and serene :)

The country drive reminds me of some of the onboard bike footage from the Ilse of Man TT. And its in real time.

The freeway stuff is strangely hypnotizing............

Cheers

It looks like video captured on a camcorder of some description, and, then just sped up 7x.

It is not possible to record more than 29 mins 59 secs (at a time) on DSLR devices (Canon's, anyway). Devices that capture more than 29 mins 59 secs are considered video recording devices and attract levies/taxes in certain jurisdictions.

Great video. I will have to give my New Zealand videos the same treatment.

Thanks guys :).

It was shot with a Canon EOS 600D with 15-85mm lens. I used the Magic Lantern firmware which enabled a few features. In this case it allowed me to shoot Full HD video at 4 frames/sec at a max exposure of 1/4sec. The video plays back at 24 frames/sec so it plays back actually 6x faster not 7x like I said at the start. The camera recorded 78mins worth of travel time as a 13min video. The file size was 3.3Gb and I ran out of card space as I already had family pics on the card I didn't want to delete. :) I reduced the bitrate by 0.8x the standard recording to save on file size. (In my planetary images I up the bitrate to 1.4x Canon's default).

As for battery life the battery was fully charged and the indicator is only now flashing after replaying it on the camera a few times. I would say it is good to record 90mins. Magic Lantern has battery saving options so the live view dims after 1 min and turns off after 5 min (or any other combo you like).

The firmware also allows for "continuous" recording of videos greater than 4Gb by simply restarting recording after each 4Gb is reached.

Damn! I should have done my Sydney-Melb-Sydney trip. But I suspect batteries wouldn't have lasted :D

Neat work Tom

Trevor,

My post still stands correct, with stock firmware. :)

Magic Lantern gets around a lot of things, as per Tom's post. It didn't occur to me that he may have been using that.

Sorry H, but it just goes to show it doesn't pay to jump to conclusions to soon.

Cheers

It was a guess; not a conclusion. I was wrong and I was corrected.

Humayun is correct about the stock standard Canon DSLR and this video would not be possible without the modified firmware. You'd have to resort to 4fps stills and make the jpgs into a movie, like normal timelapses.

Lucky I didn't use the HDR video function of Magic Lantern! ;)
