hi. i am in the process of setting up a backyard observatory and i plan on buying the Skyshed pod xl3. What length pier do you use? I have a c14 on a losmandy g11 and im not sure what length pier to use.

For memory it's 800 and something mm tall. (EDIT: its 900 tall - 940 with the adjustable adapter plate) I'll try to remember to measure it tomorrow:). I originally planned to have it 1 metre tall, but eventually decided that as long as my C8 on the CG5 could clear the wall when pointing at the horizon it would be tall enough. Probably just as well... I've since changed to an EQ6 mount which is taller than the CG5 and I have my C11 and ED80 side by side on it.:thumbsup:

I recommend you set up your mount on a tripod so the scope just clears the height of the wall when pointing at the horizon (North or South will be the lowest points if you are that worried about it;)) and then measure the height of the tripod.

If you are into visual rather than AP you might want to make it a bit taller - just be careful you don't go too tall for such a big scope;). I recommend a good adjustable observing chair and even foam rubber camping mats on the floor (for kneeling and in case you drop an EP):thumbsup:.

I always love looking at your solar photos Al. The different views from the various focal length instruments and solar filters that you use are a treat to see. You must be one busy dude operating and managing all those configurations, not to mention the post capture processing!

Thanks Ray and Dennis. You're right dennis, the capturing is the easy part when you have an obs... the processing takes the time!

I noticed while I was capturing these yesterday, I was starting to get a few dropped frames. I thought that's odd, I usually only get that when the HDD free space is getting low. Yesterday arvo wheile I was processing I found I hadn't removed the captures from my previous session:rolleyes:. I try to move all my captures off my laptop HDD after they are processed to eliminate dropped frames and even some errors that I believe are associated.

Sorry Narayan. I've got a bit slack in the last couple of weeks. I haven't put the details on the pictures. The info is almost all in the signature:P:

H alpha shots are:

SM40, ED80, B1200, DMK 41AU02.AS (unless its high res... then there's a 2.5x Powermate between the B1200 and the DMK;))

White light shots are:

High res:

1000 Oaks off axis, C11, DMK 41AU02.AS

Low res:

Baader Solar film, ED80, DMK 41AU02.AS

1 @ 2 are the SM40, 3 is with the Powermate, 4 and 5 are with the C11. No white light ED80 shots this time.
