Done for another year - finally submitted my entries.
I'd hoped to have been able to enter more Symmetry shots, but just never got/made the opportunity to plan and take some shots.
The widefield and solar system sections are going to be extremely well contested this year no doubt, with loads of celestial events to choose from..
- total lunar eclipse
- comet lovejoy
- transit of venus
plus the exponentially growing lot of widefield milkyway and nightscape photography type shots by some very talented people.
I can't wait to see the winners!
Octane

The symmetry section is going to be choc full of reflection images. It would take something outright spectacular to win this one -- a hard subject.
Didn't submit anything this year -- nothing to submit!

Over The Next 2 Weeks The Judging will Be Done.A 2 Week Wait or Longer for That Confirmation Email.Remember even if You Don't win the 60Da in The Grand Prize You can Save up and Buy One for about $1670.00 in Australia. If you save up and buy something you usually Appreciate it more -All the Greef you go through saving those bucks up.If someone gives you something you might not Value it as Much. Tony
Paul Haese
17-06-2012, 11:31 AM
Tony it is actually a really cool top prize given this is an astronomy competition, maybe in later years you guys could approach FLI, SBIG or even QSI about having one of their cameras as a prize and Canon still presenting this camera as a prize.
edit. I think this prize is better than prize money. So top idea.
anthony.tony
17-06-2012, 12:37 PM
I know I was Only after a Bite. The beauty of the 60Da is you can still take daytime images Then Jam it on the back of a Telescope and Do Astroimaging with it or a lens and do widefield shots. They probably won't Produce a lot of them so to own one would be a Buzz.We had to wait a long time From the 20Da to the 60Da.-Tony.
Adelastro1
17-06-2012, 08:04 PM
Got mine in with payment with 13 minutes to spare! Phew. Late thanks to a busy week and getting sick!
The 60Da would be great to win, with an adaptor to put my Nikon lenses on! :P The little pocket Canon IXUS I won in the comp last year is great and I think I value it more having won it in this comp. I say to people when I show them to camera - "I won that!"
Good luck everyone!

thanks all. it was great to be in parkes again amongst such talented and friendly company. congrats to all and your various awards, mentions and commendations.. all of it very fine work. there is of course some irony for me in winning the award with an image taken closer to home and at a more civilised hour than (almost) any other entry i've ever submitted. but of course from david's judging perspective that is not entirely a random outcome.
the whole event is a great credit to the organisers and all involved. being at the centre of australian radio astronomy is always interesting.. this time i enjoyed hearing from and chatting to Dr Lisa Harvey-Smith, the scientist who prepared our bid, about the science and politics of the SKA site selecton. fascinating stuff, if a touch depressing too.
and i had to chuckle when i arrived at 'the dish' at 10:30pm on friday night.. i only needed one guess to figure that the only other car in the far corner of the car park would of course be alex cherney, who i shortly found chatting to john sarkissian waiting for the rain to clear! we had fun both friday and saturday nights making the best of the fickle weather trying to image the morning conjunction around the dish. on saturday night, alex went straight from the awards while i opted for two hours sleep first. i'm not sure which of us can blame the other for the clouds, sucker holes and fleeting gaps but it's always more fun with company. here's one very quick result (http://philhart.com/content/conjunction-dish) from friday night/saturday morning.
and while you might think the winner should not have any quibbles with the judging (and of course i don't ;)), i do have to finish by noting that david thought my beautiful takahashi epsilon diffraction spikes were a star filter applied in photoshop! ye gods!
look forward to seeing many of you again at the eclipse!

Just got back to the big smoke after a very enjoyable night at the Malin Awards. It was great to see some old faces again and meet new winners for the first time.
I suspect there was a stuff-up in some entry names, the White light Venus transit image I submitted was not selected by David for an HM, the image he picked was my H-alpha version! Can't complain, a Win, HM and HC is pretty cool :)
Congrats to Phil ... seems my suspicions were correct :)
A BIG thank-you needs to go out to the tireless John Sarkissian, CWAS, and Canon Australia for being such a fantastic sponsor.

Not been home long either after a 12 hour drive (the company could have been better though Paul :-P ). No, most enjoyable trip. Having someone to talk to along the way certainly made it seem to go faster, and Paul and I discussed lots I can tell you!
Thanks once again to the organisers, John Sarkissian, David, the CWAS, and Canon. And well done to Phil, all the winners, HMs, commendations, editor's choice winners and everyone that entered. There were a record number of entrants this year but slightly down on entries however. This was my third trip over in a row but the first to the conference during the day and it was great as well with interesting talks. One of the highlights of the trip was meeting Terry Lovejoy, and his father Keith, after photographing 'his' comet last Xmas and receiving a HM with one. Both great to talk to and Terry's talk about modern comet detecting methods was fascinating. And of course another highlight was talking to the best imagers in the country and picking up a many tips and ideas after sharing knowledge. I'm inspired now to go out and take some more shots! That's what I like about events like this - it helps motivate you to do better and better.
I hope Alex got some sleep this morning - I left him imaging at the dish at 2am last night after the awards! I learned quite a bit in the short time imaging alongside him which was great. I'm soooo envious of his equipment! Thanks Alex for letting me use your light and super duper tripod too!
Until next year...

I'm back in Brisbane too, after a great weekend in Parkes. My first experience of these awards, and it was great to put faces to names and meet lots of the photographers whose work I've admired over the last few years! Well done to all the other winners, and especially to Phil for the overall award! And of course thanks to John Sarkissian and the organising committee, and all the sponsors.

 Nuts! ...should have used it for a wide field entry :)
Not sure what to take away from the awards this year.
David went to some lenghts to state it was visual impact...eg strong graphic elements... that you can just as easily capture with say, a DSLR, rather than a mega-CCD, was what he was looking for.
The standard, well, gets better every year. I was particularly impressed with Colin Legg's work.
By the way...anyone know what next year's open theme will be??

John Sarkissian spoke to a group of us at night's end and we asked when next year's theme category would be announced. He said please send him any suggestions. He has no idea at this stage and I'm sure David doesn't either! John thought of this year's theme. He hopes to announce it by about October at the latest.

And the exhibition tour dates are up too! Great to see it coming to the SA Museum for the first time. I commented to John that having them in the basement of the RiAus wasn't the best for numbers of people coming through to see it (only 700 apparently) so the museum should increase that to thousands, especially since the tour dates are in School holidays! Also great to see it going to Perth and Cairns.

to deal with the endless stream of media enquiries (actually, just one so far :P), i've put up a post with some more details of the melbourne moonrise image:
http://philhart.com/content/melbourne-moon-2012-david-malin-awards
i heard from john sarkissian that geoffrey wyatt spent two years trying for his moon image last year. if so, that's quite an effort! i certainly don't claim as such for mine.
seeing all the images on a real monitor now rather than the parkes projector certainly brings them out in greater glory. i think the winners in each category are all well deserved..
my personal favourite is probably peter wards high res venus transit.. stunning details and striking composition and of course very different to any other year. i don't plan to take up high-res imaging anytime soon but the transit images were all impressive and i thought a venus transit might be a chance for the overall award this year.. sorry guys .
Colin Legg's video is something else.. look at the quality of this, including sequences combining five cameras into one high res view of the sky!? http://vimeo.com/45856570
alex' widefield lovejoy and [anything] by martin pugh both great winning images, and trent's symmetry image very impressive now.. my view on the night was a little confused by david's crop and pan as he presented them quite quickly. alex' lake tekapo is pretty striking too and not surprisingly the photo editor's choice. so that leaves me with not much to disagree about ;)!

Yeah a few people had thought that too. I did get a bit hopeful after David called out my name for one image and then let me go back to my seat as he had told Alex to remain seated for his two HM's. It was the editors choice that put my image up into the position behind the winning entry for hi res. Oh well next time. ;)
Not sure of the value of the editors choice though. Are those being published?

Have to agree with you Phil re Peters Sol and Venus, I recon you were pretty lucky  but considering your consitency and diversity in this contest over the years, you deserved to win on that alone
Interesting to see the full entry pool, the total number of images entered was less than I expected (169) and Deep Sky remains the most competitive category with 3 times as many images entered compared to Solar System.

With the deep sky category attracting the far greatest numbers of entries I suggest that the Deep Sky category be broken down into Galaxies, Nebulae, Globulars and Narrowband.
Especially considering the techniques and approaches for each of these is somewhat different.
This then gives the competition a broader appeal and balance and keeps its astronomy roots firmly intact.
It could even solicit an additional sponsor who sells telescopes/CCD cams/mounts.
The Ice in Space calendar shows a good balance of different types of astro shots as a good example.

Deep sky with David is tough...and was asked by David which image I would have picked.
The answer was "none of the above" (sorry Phil..but hey...so what :)) and suggested Martin's M81...which didn't even make the cut...but it's David's call, and if you don't like that, don't enter.
That said...I'm very chuffed at David's response (according to the Sun-Herald) to my "King of pain" image ie: "What the heck is that!?"
As I've said earlier...any image that makes you want to cross a room and take a closer look has to tick a few boxes.

Well said Phil. The comp has given me inspiration to go out and take some more images after seeing what everyone has done.
They've been published on the Herald Sun website and here (http://www.news.com.au/national/melbourne-moon-lights-up-astronomy-awards/story-fndo4eg9-1226428436254) so far so I presume they may be on similar sites and web articles and hopefully magazines.

I didn't & probably never will know.
At the awards night I had asked Martin, prior to talking to David, whether he entered that particular M81 image. He said he had.
And the rest as they say is history...

No those are some of the DM winners, the editors choice images are not published on that site.

in my experience journos and media are a law unto themselves and there's no predicting what they will do, even if they have promised one thing something else will happen an hour later! i think they have too many images and don't know what to do with such a rich choice. it may be that other journos have access to the full set of winners and editors picks and may run with different choices? fingers crossed..

Yeh I know but they do have Alex's overall editor's choice winner on that site. At least they were listed on the Herald sun site along all the other winners.

The links to "next image" are broken in many (all) categories ? I can see only 6 images under Deep Sky before my Chrome freezes and spits the dummy. Same on my iPhone. IE doesn't even go past the first image.
Do web designers actually test those pages using variety of browsers, or "it works for me" is the final test ?
I just can't understand the obsession with "latest technology" (or is this "most complex technology") in creating simple web pages that are supposed to show few dozen pictures. If it is complex, it will break.

John Sarkissian sent through these couple of links from the Sydney Morning Herald about Phil's win (first one) and the winners (2nd). You got some nice publicity there Phil! The gallery got some of the details incorrect - eg. alex's comet photo won the widefield, not a runner up. Typical media...
In today's "Sydney Morning Herald":

Even though I didn't get the editor's pick. :)
It's great to see the coverage the awards are getting in the national media though - well done John and the whole team.

The Herald Sun and now Sydney Morning Herald and The Melbourne Age.
Fantastic job John!

Yes he certainly did. Both Paul and I have been contacted by the Adelaide Advertiser for an article too! I just did a telephone interview and the article on us two SA winners will probably appear in the paper early next week.
Well done Mike.
I was waiting in the local cafe this evening, opened the SMH and there on
page 3 was your magnificient image.

Well, the links are fixed now! And I'm glad they are ...
The standards for all entries are just about stratospheric! I reckon at least a dozen entries (if not more) from deep sky could rightfully have won the award . Well done guys, can't believe how quickly the standards of Australian astrophotography reached truly world class. From now on I think David might just as well toss a coin :)

Cheers Marc. My dig was more at the aussie press, nothing mentioned or hosted anywhere. A bit disapointing - you would have thought the public would be just as interested. Seems not.

There were 8 animation entries. David put a slide up at the start with all the numbers of entries.

Yep, they often don't have a clue behind the science of many images.
Iv'e tested the animation waters... so much the keep constant... over so many hours. If your etalon shifts and dust motes dance...well.... bugger!
Tough gig.
I really liked your sequences Col. Don't be phased by the press, for the most part they need some remedial science training.

Thanks Peter. I think the bird has flown this time around. Wasn't holding out much hope, so not really that disappointed.
Good luck with the animations! Would be nice to see more entries next year.
