Just after midnight I was out with the bino's and I saw Betelgeuse go off it was incredible anyone else see it I have been hoping that I would be watching when this happened. INCREDIBLE:D

Funny you should note that. Had same type of experience years ago. My log records 18/4/07 went outside looking at Orion's belt and saw a short red pulse flash at 8.30pm.(NZ Lat 40'.28 south) Once only and in or near Zeta Tauri or Elnath. Surprised me so much could've been nearer Betelgeuse. Being sober and alert was sure of what I saw. Next day searched all mainstream websites for reports of the same - found nought. The red pulse was only a matter of 2 seconds and since had to put it down to optical illusion as no other saw anything of it. But I do wonder whether short bursts of visible rays can put on fleeting displays from those Orion monsters. Was pleasing to read your report.

Hi Paul, What you probably saw was a face on meteor entering the atmosphere, but then it could not be either.
I have seen many such flashes in my 26 years observing and also have seen stars brighten for a short time,but have been told by professional astronomers this is not possible.
A member on iceinspace who writes for an Astronomy magazine has also seen the same phenomenon,which was discussed on an observing site frequented by professional Astronomers,was told it could not happen,but him and I disagree, as we had observed such things happening.

_Could well be a chance, face on, perspective of a meteor. Never thought of that. Only ever saw it once. When sightings not receiving widespread reporting, just park them in unexplained book. Glad to hear others observe short lived cosmic changes --cheers Paul
