mouse problems - help!

hi guys I seem to be experiencing some problems with my optical mouse...

it creeps diagonally up the screen when left to its own devices...
i have winxp pro w/ sp2....

any ideas?

Could be a broken tail, or maybe not plugged in firmly, but they're as cheap as chips, maybe you should just buy a new one.

ARRRR Fringy!.....ok I'll shut it..My built-in-mouse on the laptop does this at times, no idea why. I had an optical mouse once on the desk top computer......suffice to say I didn't like it.;)

I find if you hit them with a fly swat when they are on the run they stop really quick. (True story, done it twice now, stops them every time)

Do you have a multi-coloured mouse mat? Because they are optical sensors they work best if you have a single colour mouse mat ie all red. I had this problem when I had a mouse mat with pictures all over it, changed to a single colour mat and problem went away.

any other ideas guys? I have googled it and "creeping mouse" came up a bit but with no fix...

Best fix is not to use an optical mouse or have a look at it's bottom it might have bum fluff up its sensor which could cause it to run.

Why do people suggest not to use an optical mouse? I have used them for years and will never go back to a ball mouse.:screwy:

I had some trouble with some printed circuit board CAD software when using an optical mouse (intermittent pauses) ages ago and have been using a ball mouse at work since then. However the optical mouse I have at home is faultless with this software so it may be time to try again as I am sick and tired of cleaning out my mouse's belly button at work.

Also when first person shoot 'em up gaming there is no momentum when you spin rapidly round with an optical mouse and accidentally lift it off the desk. I used to like this, but others see it as a con rather than a pro.

Some of the older optical mice were lower resolution. If you have that kind of trouble with it then you should try the Microsoft Laser Mouse 6000. I have the wireless version of this and it is great. With my old mouse if you quickly flicked the cursor from one edge of the screen and back again very fast it would skip on the screen. It does not happen with this new mouse.

Another tip. With the new optical mice you need to plug them into the USB socket and not the PS2 mouse socket. The PS2 is an old format and does not have the required bandwidth for the speed of the new mice.
