Looking forward to seeing the Foreign Correspondent piece at 20:00 AEDT tonight,
20 Mar 2012, by Zoe Daniel on ABC1.

Burma has been under the control of military junta for a long time, but it recently
allowed Zoe Daniel and cameraman, David Leland, permission to take a trip
through the country and to film as journalists.

On a personal note, I traveled through Burma in 1986 and sometimes when
people ask what my favorite place to visit in the world is, I will often cite
Bagan, which when I visited was known as Pagan.

I note in the trailers for the Foreign Correspondent piece they are showing scenes
of this amazing place.

When I visited Bagan in the mid-80's, there were so few tourists that most of the
time you had the whole place to yourself. Certainly nothing fancy as hot air
balloons. I spent the days cycling among and exploring and photographing the
enormous number of ancient stupa. You would leave your bicycle outside
a stupa, explore the passages inside, make your way to the top, look
in the distance to the next stupa, cycle out to it and repeat the process.
You could go hours between meeting someone and when you did, it would
often be local kids wanting to sell you something like bananas.

It is certainly one of the world's great sights and the surrounding mountains combined
with the air having an orange glow of fine red dust at sunset makes it one
of the word's most amazing places to photograph.

I would personally add it to the list of great wonders of the world.
