Here is a (yet another..) standard candle. The seeing wasn't great and the moon was half full...so a few small gradients happening that I didn't bother fixing.
Wasn't going to post it , but hey, it's raining.... again....

Flat - tick!
Sharp - tick!
Reckons she's a keeper.
Out of curiosity, how long were your subs? I see it was 5:5:5 overall, but how long were the individual subs.
And why is your eyeball hairy?

Subs?? Like from Subway? 12" as I recall.... (takes about five minutes for each step :) )
Hairy eyeball??
Noun
hairy (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/hairy) eyeball (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/eyeball) (plural hairy eyeballs (http://en.wiktionary.org/w/index.php?title=hairy_eyeballs&action=edit&redlink=1))
(slang (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Appendix:Glossary#slang)) A look askance (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/askance) at someone; a look of disdain (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/disdain) or skepticism (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/skepticism).
I take the latter definition.... Is it in focus? Nup! Just a 'rittle bit more :)

That Astro-Physics 305mm F3.8 Riccardi-Honders Astrograph
has amazing optics.
I can't belive how tight the stars are right to edge of the field.
That's a really great photo.

Very nice indeed Peter
Definately some gradients in there but still just sensational.
When you make a purchase like that and it all works you get such a feeling of pleasure every time you use it. Congratulations. very jealous
Marvellous view. Stunning really.
Don't you dare NOT post any of these pics please Peter - we all need our fix of astro-porn while the weather is #$@!

Daaaaaayum. Such short exposures and already so many faint fuzzier in bg. Gorgeous.

Impressive. There are a couple of faint fuzzies in the field as well.

Looking good Peter.
You even have some nice detail on that nearly edge-on galaxy, ESO 270-015.
The very slight gradiant doesn't really detract from the image in my eyes.

Very nicely resolved Peter. Huge field definitely adds prspective tothe image.
Not so sure about your choise of Scotch. A bit peatty for my taste. Islay Malts are renound for their strong taste. I prefer a bit softer malts.

Yes, excellent example of this candle. Stars are pin sharp, probably better than any other example I have seen.
As with Trevor I see some very slight green in the image. Not too distracting though.
Wanna try around Rho Ophiuchi next. I reckon that will be a monster.

Love the focusing set up you have.

Thanks guys for your feedback.
I'm pleased to report I've replaced the green gradient with a magenta one. :)

Another fabulous example of the beauty of that scope. Still a tad of green in your yellow stars throwing the colour off the true yellow but very minor.
Greg.

Thanks Greg..... I never expected this quick-and-dirty-effort to attract so much scrutiny ! :)
I wasn't going to fuss with it much, due the background being gradient city....but have now made the yellows less green.
Suspect I'll have have to give it a far more serious re-shoot and see if I can catch some of the galactic cirrus Steve Crouch first revealed some years back

Yes its a fabulous image for such a quicky. It would be an amazing feat if you could capture the cirrus from the Burbs. I think you probably can.

Peter, can I ask about your filters? Was this shot from light polluted city? Do you use LP filters? Or do you process out the LP with background calibration etc?
Peter Ward
20-03-2012, 01:58 PM
I'm located on the southern side of Sydney... light pollution is moderate to the south and tragic to the north.
LP filters are not useful with CCD's. I use a standard Baader RGB set.
CCD's behave quite differently to DSLR's as you have quite a bit more dynamic range, with significantly less noise. Hence it's not difficult to pluck usable signal from a good deal of light pollution.

Looks great now Peter. I did not think this was a quick and dirty. Forgive the critique.

Ho hum ... 15 minutes of data <yawn> ...
It's going to be clear tomorrow night and Saturday night. Let's see what 10 hours of data achieves!
Cheers, Marcus
PS: Just kidding Peter - I'm wiping the drool off my beard. A 12" APO it is!

Yes that's exactly what it is. I suspect Roland tweaked this 2nd run a bit from the first run. It seems even better.

Sorry for the tardy respinse, but net access in hotel rooms can get pretty slooowww... Happy to now be back on broadband.
Thanks for the feedback. Hope to keep them coming if the weather holds :)
They are sensitive beasties (to focus) Greg. I've finally given up on the hairy eyeball approach and ordered a Starlight digital focuser for the scope...hopefully will pull the star sizes in a tad more.
Been at work for the last six days.... It was clear???!!
