Ok guys,
I have to share with you, because it is fantastic.
Just got Reverse Osmosis filtration for water, and when you try this water without fluoride (and chloride, etc) you won't never go back.
It is really "drinkable", no smell, and some studies are saying fluoride makes you every day dummer (your IQ is going down because you are being poisoned every day).
I got smaller system with 4 litres (with very good tap) costed around $1000.- but I can tell you worth EVERY CENT!

So how much are replacement elements? How often? What happens to the waste water - down the drain? What is the quoted performance ie conc of F Cl SO4 in vs out? How do you stop microbes breeding in the system?

BTW my feeling is that if F is in sufficient conc to fume the HF formed in the water would kill you quicksmart. It's the Cl that may fume, especially if you are near the treatment plant. They need to add enough Cl at the plant to make sure the conc is above the level necessary to kill microbes at the far end of the line. Otherwise you may swap slow morbidity from the Cl to quick death from the microbes. Being in Sydney this probably isn't an issue but where the water supply is not well filtered before clorination there is a considerable problem from the formation of organo-chlorides, and they can be nasty.

Goodness me, I thought an activated carbon filter was sufficient to get rid of the nasties...

waste water goes down the drain.
Bacteria size is 3-5 microns and membrane is 1 micron, so no need to be worry.
Even if you connect salt water, you are getting desalinated water!

Sorry but I don't think you have all the facts at hand. You are actually wasting at least 60-70% of your potable water and there are also considerable long term health risks associated with drinking this water. See http://www.who.int/water_sanitation_health/dwq/nutdemineralized.pdf
Just for your information but it's a very wasteful process and really not needed in my opinion.

When we were at sea all our fresh water was produced by reverse osmosis using the heat of the engine exhaust system. never had any problems with it.

At home I always drink tap water even if it has "nasties" in it. The bodies imune system is designed to take care of this very quickly. Never touch bottled stuff. (Except as purified in the distilleries of Scotland).

David , as I am not stingy person, I do not care for 80 per cent water waste !
And fyi it is not dem. H2O, but it is up to you to believe it or not.

Years ago my Grandfather said it was a cure for colds and flu. I was given some of his finest 'Glen'. :eek: It definitely purified me but did not fix my cold. Never been back for more.

You obviously didn't read the PDF. Reverse osmosis water IS demineralised water and due to the low water pressure associated with home domestic supply about 60-70% or more is wasted in driving the filtration process.
I've been using reverse osmosis purified water for the last 20-30 years. It replaced distilled and double distilled water due to cost and better filters.
The long term ingestion of demineralised/de-ionized water leads to osteoporosis as well as demineralization in the teeth. I've had two laboratory assistants that had continuously inbibed reverse osmosis generated water during their 20's for about a decade until that practice was banned in all university laboratories. They both suffer from oral demineralization and one has osteoporosis. Long term use of such water is a health hazard but it's up to you if you continue using it. It's like smoking. Long term hazard.

We used a flash evap process on board ship - reverse osmosis was only for survival craft.
In Bermuda the hotel I was Engineer of has a 90 horsepower RO plant - makes 20,000 litres a day from sea water.
Pain in the rear to run (well back in the eighties it was)
