View Full Version here: : AR1429 sun spot in white light

Hello,
Here is a nice portrait of AR1429, a sun spot which first appeared on March 2 and then erupted on March 5 with a major X1-class flare, sending a storm of plasma and charged particles towards the Earth which sparked some sensationalist reporting in the popular media.
In the end, the CME missed the Earth but from the gallery of photos I have seen on various astronomy sites, it did produce some amazing auroral displays.
This image was taken from our backyard in Brisbane on 10th March. Despite an invitingly optimistic jet stream map, the atmospheric conditions were quite challenging so I had to keep pausing the recording of the AVI, in order to harvest the few fleeting moments of better seeing, to produce this final image.
Cheers
Dennis

Dennis,
A very impressive image. Love the fine detail, especially the granulation/convection cells on the solar surface. Thanks for showing.

That's sensational Dennis. You always post the best white light shots. Such clarity. What program do you use to stack?

Hi Guys and thanks for your words of appreciation, I almost gave up and this image was generated from my very last AVI for the day!:)
@Marc – I mainly use AVIStack as for some reason, on my 4 year old Win XP Pro SP3 PC, Registax seems to a little unstable and I haven’t been able to find a reliable work around.
If I have data that requires a little customised massaging, I use AVIStack V1.8 on a per AVI basis, but if I have good data, I have found the Batch Processing Mode of AVIStack V2.0 to be very good. On my PC I can process around 10 AVI’s overnight, to find the images ready the next morning for touching in Photoshop.:)
I can get Registax 5 & 6 to work very well on AVI’s of Sirius, limited to less than 1 GB, but seem to hit snags as soon as I try a 2500 frame AVI of around 1.9 GB.
Cheers

Wow thats an exquisite image Dennis, you really take white light solar imaging to new heights. Interesting how the biggest spot almost look like a spiral. Well done.

Cracking image Dennis. Certainly have the white light imaging of spots down pat. Not many imagers world wide are producing such results.
