It is actually possible to extract data from the (very) new moon during a total solar eclipse.
You need to take a several second exposure during totality, which will reveal a very burnt-out corona, but also some lunar detail.
This is a previously un-released image of the total solar eclipse of 2006.
(Photoshop 5.5 is sooo much better than Ver 1.0)
