G'day all,

I had some great fun photographing aurora australis from the hills of Perth last night:

http://www.rogergroom.com/items/aurora_australis_march_2012_perth

The moon obviously had a huge impact, reducing the visibility of the aurora from their full potential, but it was just great to get some aurora photo's again! It's been a long time. Also a very pleasant evening to be out photographing them.

The photo doesn't show the full story really, I've had trouble stacking the images without washing out the less persistent areas of aurora with brightly moonlight sky. Flicking between the 15 exposures it's obvious there is more aurora there than easily seen in this photo but I just haven't managed to get it to jump out at you in this photo. I think some extensive masking work is required, I probably won't spend the time doing it.

A time lapse I might do, but I only have 15 exposures with the aurora, so it would make for a very short time lapse :)

Enjoy :)

Roger.

Very nice photography. I hope to see the Aurora Australis with my own eyes one day.

Why do we seem to get more variation in colour than the images taken of the Northern Lights?

Woo-hooooo, excellent Roger

There's more on the way :)

My pleasure :)

I tend to think we (at Perth's lattitude) get to see less colour variation than those in the northern hemisphere ... predomenantly pink I find, little green. Last night there was a hint of green but I think the green was more easily washed out by the moon. I think it all comes down to the brightness, but I'm no expert :)

Yes, looking forward to another crack at it tomorrow night :) Thanks :)

Tonight is looking good too
Sky is clear, and after the Dragons NRL game finishes I'm heading up to the clubroom to set up the camera

Aurora is already showing up on the graph at the bottom of NZ: http://helios.swpc.noaa.gov/ovation/South.html

Has anyone on the east coast seen the aurora recently? (realise sydney or brissy is optimistic, but wondering if they've been bright lately)

I've been surprised at the lack of photo's on IIS so maybe not . There's been a handful posted on other lists from Tassy etc but nothing higher that I can recall.

A quick time lapse:

I hope to redo the video with more time, as the frames are essentially raw and so the aurora could be brought out a lot more with processing of the frames.

Roger.
